Ok, just heard form Subs.
Let's run combofix again.
Please makes you sure you disable these two before running combofix.

FW: Norton AntiVirus v15.5.0.23 (Symantec Corporation)
AV: Norton AntiVirus v15.5.0.23 (Symantec Corporation)

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Well, I tried disabling everything in the Norton Antivirus Settings and such, including my Windows Firewall. Every possible option in Norton was disabled, however after running combofix again I got the same problem when it rebooted.

After restoring, I tried runnning combofix in Safe Mode thinking that some of the background services may be interfering, but the same issue still occurs; I have no idea why. Perhaps I am not disabling the correct "AV" and "FW" components of Norton in the correct way? I am not sure.

Is there a C:\combofix.txt? Could you post it here if you find one.

To be safe, we'll hold off fix again.

Let's do a system restore,

Go to Task Manager then Click on "File" Menu
Select New Task then
Paste
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Then press Enter key.
Restore to an earlier point prior to Combofix running.

Will post back as soon as able.

I could not find a C:\combofix.txt (when ran from the Task Manager), but I found a combofix.txt in the C drive (Local Disk), and here is what it said:

ComboFix 08-06-15.4 - Brian 2008-06-18 3:17:21.1 - NTFSx86 MINIMAL
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\Desktop\ComboFix.exe

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

I read a little about combofix and the tutorial mentioned a few steps of some kind of recovery software needing to be installed from Microsoft Corporation. Might that be the issue?

We'll skip Combofix for now.

Let's move on with the fix.
We will need your Windows XP installation CD.

You should read this post completely before performing these instruction.

Reboot computer with Windows XP cd inserted in your CD-ROM drive.
A message will appear during boot to "Press any key to boot from the CD".
  • After the setup files are finished loading press R to repair using Recovery Console.
  • Choose the installation (usually number 1) that you need to access from the Recovery Console and then press ENTER.
  • Login to the Administrator account by typing the password for this account. If you don't have one leave it blank, then press ENTER.
  • At the recovery console command prompt, type the following command exactly.
Expand <cd-drive>:\i386\userinit.ex_ <hd-drive>:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
[/list]Note: In these two commands, the <cd-drive> represents the drive letter of your CD drive, and the <hd-drive> represents the drive letter of the hard disk on which your Windows XP is installed.
  • If you receive a prompt to overwrite the file, press Y.
  • Type exit, and press ENTER at the command prompt.
  • Once done, type Exit.
  • Reboot your computer.

Post back with a new HiajckThis log...

The OS we have, Windows XP Home Edition, was pre-installed at purchase. However, the only installation CD we have is for Windows XP Professional.

Following your directions, though, I tried pressing "R" after the setup files were finished, but nothing happened. There is only a menu with 2 options asking me to install Windows XP into the -: or C: drives. Should I continue, or will re-installing/upgrading the OS erase all of our files saved to the disk?

And now let's use Combofix again. :)

Your system is Windows XP SP2.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

Hey koko crunch,

My girlfriend took the machine to her uncle last weekend, who works with Microsoft a lot, and he used Spyware Doctor to find out the problem. I am guessing that Spyware Doctor was able to clean everything out, however, he said that the extreme amounts of lag was caused by a program that corrupted most likely by the hijacking. The program is called Nero Back it Up, and all he had to do was reinstall the program. Her laptop is working just like new again.

Sorry about taking so long to reply this last time. I just wanted to thank you for all that you have done for us. Hopefully I won't need to come back to the forums, for he installed Norton Enterprise Edition and educated my girlfriend on how to prevent this sort of thing. So, here's wishing for luck.

That's good to hear.
Thank you for letting me know.

Here are some recommendations.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future get these following free programs:

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Goodluck! :)
