Unable to access itunes store

I recently am unable to access the itunes store, I receive an error message that itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close, this also happens when my picture viewer tries to open. I am able to access the internet. I have windows xp and I recently installed avg 8.0. I have never had any problems in the past accessing itunes store. Any advice out there??? TIA
