Awhile ago, I noticed that most of my bookmarks in Firefox had disappeared, and when I open Task Manager it looks odd (no bar at the top, no tabs, etc). Once opened, the Task Manager will not close except through the green box in the taskbar's right corner; it also can open multiple copies of Task Manager at once. Periodically, Microsoft Word will come up with an error message and restart itself when I try to shut it down, but that could just be normal Microsoft bugginess. In addition, my computer has slowed down. I use Avast! and it hasn't found anything but a lot of files it says it can't scan.
I also have a problem where my screen goes black, and the only way to fix it is to do a hard shutoff. When I restart, it tells me there was a system error. However, I think this is caused by a driver problem, not an infection, but I'm not sure.
If there is anything you'd like to see (like screenshots or contents of error reports), I have a lot of that stuff saved already, so just ask.
Any help you could give me would be much appreciated.

I did a Panda scan and it said I was clean, but I don't think it actually did the scan since it only took about 3 seconds. So then I did a scan with TrendMicro HouseCall, which said I have 94 infections of "ADWARE_MEMWATCHER" in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts\127.0.0.1" but when I hit the "clean now" button it froze.
Then I used the online scan at http://virusscan.jotti.org/ to scan the files in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" and it said that several of them were infected with "Adware.Softomate.K". I can give you more detailed info if you want.

So what's going on, is my system clean? The task manager is still messed up, and (if possible) I'd like to get my old Firefox bookmarks back.
Thanks for bearing with me.

Hello

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

My task manager is still acting strange. What else can I do?
By the way, what should I do with any files that are in the MBAM quarantine from previous scans? Both of them were listed as "Quarantined and deleted successfully" in their respective logs, but they still appear on the quarantine tab.

Thanks.

Your task manager problem isn't malware related

Leave the stuff in MBAMs quarantine

Your logs are clean

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

OTMoveIt2 was in the middle of cleanup when my screen went black. I had to do a hard shutoff and restart. As I mentioned in my first post, this is a recurring problem that has something to do with a driver. That's a whole different issue, I'm not trying to ask you for help with that.
The thing is, I don't know whether the cleanup was done or not when I had to shut it off. The icon's not there anymore, so I can't just redo it. Is it okay to go on to the next step anyway? Or should I do something else?

Thank you again for your help.

I have a few more questions.

Things that came up while following your instructions:
Do I need to do something to my DNS Client service (as mentioned on the http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm" page), or was running the mvps.bat file enough?
I installed IE-Spyad but when I went to try and update it (http://www.spywarewa...uc/resource.htm) it said that I also have to use something called ZonedOut. What now?
You recommend installing SpywareGuard, but I don't know if it will conflict with a program I already have (see below).

Also, I have an awful lot of security-related programs on my computer now:

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
avast! Antivirus
Windows Defender
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
SUPERAntiSpyware
ATF Cleaner
HijackThis
NoScript addon for Firefox
McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox
SpywareBlaster
IE-Spyad

In the interest of saving space, I am wondering if there are any of these I don't need and can uninstall.

Finally, "So how did I get infected in the first place?" recommends several programs including ZoneAlarm or Outpost, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D. Should I install any of these, in your opinion?

Thank you for helping me and putting up with my endless questions :)

You ran MVPS fine

ZonedOut is the latest version of IE-SPYAD

SpywareGuard will conflict with Windows Defender so you can leave it

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer - remopve
avast! Antivirus
Windows Defender - remove
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
SUPERAntiSpyware - remove
ATF Cleaner
HijackThis - remove
NoScript addon for Firefox - remove
McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox
SpywareBlaster
IE-Spyad

Should I install any of these, in your opinion?

I would install Comodo firewall, and SpywareGuard if you remove Windows Defender. Other than that, you are sorted

Any other questions ?
