Limited Connectivity Problem

Hello everyone,

I am currently at my Father's house and am giving him this laptop. Wi-Fi connections from publics places work, but my other computer works and is hardwired to the router. The problem is that this laptop (Dell Latitude D820) has the limited connectivity problem when I try to hardwire it into the router as well. I am using Roadrunner internet and a D-Link DES-1105 router. The laptop is sending packets, but is not being assigned a IP address. It was originally a 169 IP, or whatever Windows assigns by default. Here's a cheap diagram of the current setup...


Yes it's one of these again. I've been to multiple places and tried multiple solutions to this problem, but to little avail. Gonna go ahead and go through what I've tried and see where we can go from here. I've done these, in no particular order.

  • Tried a System Restore from the last date that I used a hardwire connection.
  • Tried assigning it an IP manually by inputting a gateway, ip address, etc from the other computer that's connected to the router.
  • Tried resetting winsock.
  • Tried using the network in Safe Mode, so that suggests none of my virus programs or firewalls is at fault.
  • Tried turning off the wireless card, in case that was interfering
  • Tried ipconfig /renew and /release.
  • Tried netsh winsock reset catalog.

I dunno what else to try. Here's my HijackThis Log just to skip that step of having you guys have to ask for it. Thanks in advance, guys. :)

First off, what is that .exe running from your /temp folder?

What network connections are showing in control panel | network connections? If you right-click on the wired network connection and select 'Properties', what items are being used by that connection (which items are checked in the box)?

Looked into that .exe file and it wasn't there when I booted up this morning. Tried to find it in search and manually searched through the /temp folder manually. It's gone.

Quick update, I manually added the IP address and DNS information again and the limited connectivity went away. But I am still not receiving any packets. I pinged localhost successfully, but cannot ping my DNS server. :)

I think it also might be noteworthy that this has happened at this location before, but I forgot how I fixed it. I'm pretty sure if I tried another connection elsewhere, it would work. But the other computer here works, as well.
