Sorry... this is kind of a long explaination, but please hear me out.....

I recently purchased a new 300GB Western Digital Hard Drive, model name WD3000JBRTL. I tried to install this device today on a IDE cable with my WD2500JB that leads to a promise ultra133 TX2 controller card. Neither of them is the boot drive that windows XP runs on.

Before attempting to install the new drive, I had the WD2500JB as the only hard drive on the IDE cable, and was set as a single master drive on the jumper in the back (this setting is no jumper put in, all pins open). This drive had been working fine up till now, and I had stored much valuable data on the drive.

Now, when installing the new drive (WD3000JBRTL), i mounted the drive, and i put the long end of the IDE cable (master) which was originally in the WD2500JB, into the WD3000JBRTL. I plugged in the unused slave part of the IDE cable into the WD2500JB. I then set the jumper on the back of the WD2500JB to slave (which is setting the jumper 2nd from the right), but, by mistake, i also set the jumper on the WD3000JBRTL to slave as well instead of setting it as dual-master (i put the jumper in the same position as the WD2500JB instead of in the center where it is supposted to go). I then booted up my computer without noticing my mistake.

When I went into the Disk Management screen in the Administrative Tools section of the Control Panel, the WD3000JBRTL was reading as a total space of over 500GB (I believe it was 519.17GB or a number close to that), and it was reading my WD2500JB as a total space of around 160GB. Both said they were Unallocated space. I then shut down my computer and noticed my error with the jumpers, and put the jumper to the correct center position on the WD3000JBRTL. After booting up the computer again, i went back into the device manager and it read both of the drives at the correct total disk space (232.88GB for the WD2500JB and somewhere around 270GB for the WD3000JBRTL), but both of the drives said their space was unallocated (black bar instead of blue bar).

I then decided to shut down again and remove the new WD3000JBRTL, and i set my settings back to as they were before installation, (i removed the jumper in the back of the WD2500GB, which is the setting for single-master, and put the long part of the IDE cable back in), and booted up again. Now, when I go into the Disk Management again, it reports the correct drive size, but says the Drive Status is "Unallocated" with a black bar instead of "Healthy" with a blue bar before I tried to install the WD3000JBRTL. The device manager says under Drive Status that "This drive is working properly.", although I cannot access the drive anymore.

My question is... by having both the Master and the Slave drive set to slave on the jumper settings, did I in effect delete all of the information I had stored on the WD2500JB, or undo its partiton so my computer cannot recognise the drive anymore? I would like to solve the problem of retrieving the important information I had stored on my WD2500JB before I get to installing the WD3000JBRTL.

My guess is that some sort of Data Recovery program would fix the problem... but are there any ones that are good and for free? I called up Western Digital Tech Support and they have absolutely NO CLUE what happened.

BTW... I have
-Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1
-Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.0ghz

Thanks SO MUCH for your help :tazz: ;)

EDIT: here is my hjt file incase it is needed...

HI, Welcome to Geeks To Go Forums

You have a trojan - i am not sure if it could do what you reported with your Hard drives but it is a big security risk.

http://www.sophos.co...rojagentco.html

You should download the most recent version of Hijack-This and do another scan - please repost the new log into the hijack-this section of the forum.

Thanks! I never knew I had a trojan :tazz: ;)

Can anyone provide me a link to a disk recovery software that is free though? i have tried some demo versions (which only let me see my files.... not restore them) and all the data is still on the disk, its just that the partiton is gone and windows can't load the drive.....

Thanks again.

EDIT: here is my new hjt log file...

I am still having the same problems as listed in my first post in this topic. I have downloaded the demo versions of Stellar Phoenix NTFS and Restorer 2000, and both can see all of the files on my HDD that windows cannot load and reads as "unallocated". The demo versions only let you see your files, and not restore them though. I am not sure if they can make the drive restore itself, or if i have to copy all of the files to another harddrive (my new 300GB), and then reformat the old drive. I am not sure if these programs will even restore my drive though, it is just a guess since they can see the files and I am assuming they will be able to restore them.

I have found a program that is free, and seems like it might possibly be able to resotre my files, its dos-based, and called TestDisk 5.7. I do not want to mess the situation up more by using a free program to restore my HDD unless I am absolutely sure (or strongly confident) that it will work and not create any situation that might make it so I cannot restore my HDD. This program's documentations suggests I do a DD copy in Linux of the drive to another drive (will have to be my 300GB drive in this case) before attempting to rewrite a partition table. I do not have linux, so this doesn't help me much. If there is no better way to restore my files and i have to resort to paying the $100 for Stellar Phoenix, which seems like it might have the best chance of restoring my files, then I will do so.

EDIT: I decided to take the risk and used testdisk 5.7, and it fixed the problem :tazz: Thanks for helping me though ;)
