Hello,
I'm trying to fix a friend's computer and determined that she has a large amount of spyware on her computer. I've followed all the instructions listed at the top of this forum, however I coudl not install the Super AntiSpyware program. When I tried, I got an error that said 'A system administrator has set policies to prevent this action'. The computer would let me install other programs, like Hijack This. A Hijack This and MalwareBytes Log are appended at the end of this message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello asheridan and Welcome to Geeks to Go!

Sorry for the delay. We've been quite busy this week.

The computer would let me install other programs, like Hijack This.

What do you mean?

We need to run another diagnostic tool to get more info.

click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration
click on Check All
click Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back both logs that open in notepad
Main txt and extra txt

Thank you so much for your help. With the installing programs, I could install the Avast Anti-Virus program and Ad-Aware Anti-Spyware. When I tried to install Super Anti-Spyware, that's when I got the error about the policies. So that's the only thing I could install.

Here are the logs from DSS:

Some few more cleanup to do... :)

First,

Enable AVAST!

Right-click on Avast Icon in systemtray.
Select "Start On-Access Protection"

Then,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: ShprRprts - {2A8A997F-BB9F-48F6-AA2B-2762D50F9289} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebse...?p=ZUxdm265MVUS
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.
Close HiJackThis.

Next,

Click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /DAFT
Click on the Scan button.
Select everything it is displaying there
Click the Fix button.
Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
Close DAFT if you receive that message.

Finally,
Reboot computer then post back with a New HiJackThis log.

Let's run combofix and see if it'll pick up on something?

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Let's do a deep scan.

Download Sophos Anti-Rootkit & save it to your desktop after filling out the questionaire and reading the EULA.

Note: You will need to enter your name, e-mail address and location in order to access the download page.
  • Double-click sarsfx.exe to extract the files.
  • Click the Accept button at the EULA, then Install to the default directory
  • At the next prompt, click Yes to start the program
  • Make sure the following are checked:
    • Running processes
    • Windows Registry
    • Local Hard Drives
  • Click the "Start Scan" button.
  • Allow the program to scan your computer - please be patient as it may take some time
  • Once the scan has completed a window will pop-up with the results of the scan - click OK to this
  • In the main window, you will see each of the entries found by the scan (if any)
    • If the scanner generated any warning messages, please click on each warning and copy and paste the text of it into this thread for me to review
    • Once you have posted any warning messages here, you can close the scanner and wait for me to get back to you
  • If you have not had any warnings, any entries which can be cleaned up by the scanner will have a box with a green checkmark in it next to the entry
  • To clean up these entries click on the Clean up checked items button
  • If you accidentally check a file NOT recommended for clean up, you will get a warning message and if necessary can re-select the entries you want to clean up
  • Once you have cleaned the selected files, you will be prompted to re-boot your computer - please do so
  • When you have re-booted, please post a fresh HijackThis log into this thread and tell me how your computer is running now

Then,

Download RootAlyzer to your desktop.
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop, close all windows, and run RootAlyzer.exe
  • Click Ok to the two prompts and let the program run it's Quick Scan automatically, this should only take a few seconds
  • Click the Deep Scan tab, check all the boxes and click Ok. Let the scan run un-interrupted, it will take a few minutes.
  • When it is finished scanning, a Log tab will appear at the top, click that. Highlight all the text, right-click on it and press Copy.
  • Paste that information back here by pressing Ctrl + V, or right-click and press Paste. Also mention if you had any problems.

Sorry about the delay in responding. The scan took 514 minutes once successful, and there were a few reboot mishaps along the way. The scan generated two warnings:

Warning: Could not read memory belonging to another process. Process scan may not be supported on this version of Windows.

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

And #2:

Warning: No file name could be found for this process. It may be hidden by malware - please try again after a clean up and restart.

================================================================================
===========

The scan found several unknown hidden files but all are marked "Cleanup not recommended." There are no items marked with a green check mark.

Looks ok to me...
Let's do an online scan to be sure.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

I've run the Panda Scan multiple times now and it says there are no infections. The computer still runs slow with 100% processor utilization. If all these scans are coming up negative now, I think I need to look elsewhere for the source of the problem, unless there are other scans we still might run?

Let's try to figure this one out.
First, I would like to do a deep scan to rule out Malware.
When you're cleared then, we'll try to pinpoint the source.

Please download and unzip IceSword to its own folder on your desktop

If you get a lot of "red entries" in an IceSword log, don't panic.

Step 1 : Close all windows and run IceSword. Click the Processes tab and watch for processes displayed in red color. A red colored process in this list indicates that it's hidden. Write down the PathName of any processes in red color. Then click on LOG at the top left. It will prompt you to save the log, call this Processes and save it to your desktop.

Step 2 : Click the Win32 Services tab and look out for red colored entries in the services list. Write down the Module name of any services in red color, you will need to expand out the Module tab to see the full name. Then click on LOG. It will prompt you to save the log, call this Services and save it to your desktop.

Step 3 : Click the Startup tab and look out for red colored entries in the startup list. Write down the Path of any startup entries in red color. Then click on LOG. It will prompt you to save the log, call this Startup and save it to your desktop.

Step 4 : Click the SSDT tab and check for red colored entries. If there are any, write down the KModule name.

Step 5 : Click the Message Hooks tab and check for any entries that are underneath Type and labelled WH_KEYBOARD. Write down the Process Path of these entries if present.

Now post all of the data collected under the headings for :

Processes
Win32 Services
Startup
SSDT
Message Hooks
