Hi, i'm 16 and i recently infected our family computer with this huge virus...

Here's the story please read carefully...

My friend recently lent me a video game and i was looking for a CD Key so i could play online with him so i came across a keygen to download which supposibly would help me get a cd key. So as soon as it finished downloading it immedietly opened system32 and brought it up.. right away i thought "Oh crap". So things werent bad then i started slowling down and i figured i'd restart the computer.

Once i rebooted nothingggg was repsonsive.. Firefox seized to worked and internet explorer only brought me to google. It shut down all my games and i couldnt update or open any virus protection programs. The following day i was able to get AVG sent through MSN to me by my friend, yes MSN worked for some reason. I used AVG it picked the keygen up on the thing it called it a Trojan Horse Downloader, i cleared and deleted it etc. Seems like it had no effect because i still have the same problems. Now i also tried to update avg and other anti virus programs because for some reason they started working. Once again it would not let me update them at all. Aswell i also tried using Hijack or whatever its called and the virus has blocked that from opening aswell as Killpocket or Killbox whatever its called.

So my dad took a crack at it today and just did a System Recovery... well it kinda helped considering i can atleast use Internet Explorer to use the web to seek help. This time MSN does not work and Norton Anti-Virus seems to have a mind of its own, it's now actually blocking stuff on me like crazy and i cant even shut it down!

So at this stage i've got a very slow computer running... i'm runing avg for the 6th time now and its doing nothing AVG cant pick it up and norton has gone insane. I've done everything i can... been like this for the past 3 days and im about to throw my computer out the window.. i have nothing left to do and i'd really appreciate any help.. I have a feeling a total reformat is the only possible chance, and i really don't mind reformating because i have nothing of value to keep.

So please lord... any help i'm going insane... aswell i recall the program that was installed on my desktop being called something like fliijkiil something like that... definetly had 4 ii's like that in it..

You also have to understand that i'm very limited to what i can do, most programs are un-responsive and anti-virus programs dont open but avg... If this doesnt get fixed soon or i re-format it my dad is going to kick my butt.

To tell you the truth, i'm not sure what the [bleep] it is... not sure if its spyware malware crapware or assware. But i do know it needs to go away soon. So if this is in the wrong section i'm really sorry!

Feweh, Welcome to Geeks-To-Go.

My name is GravityGripp and I will be helping you with your issues. Please note that my responses may be delayed some as I am still in training and working with an expert. However, the first thing I need for you to do is provide me with a HijackThis log.

STEP ONE
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Feweh,
I just looked over your log and it looks pretty clean to me, but lets just make double sure.

STEP ONE
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Also, if you can, lets go ahead and update Java. Sometimes having an outdated Java installation can lead to malware infections.

STEP TWO
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Alright, after looking at the DSS log, I'm certain that your machine does not have an infection. However, you are running two Anti-Virus programs which will imped your computer's performance and could cause other issues.

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

So my suggestion is to remove Symantec's products, keep AVG, and then install a free Firewall.

To remove Symantec go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Norton AntiVirus 2006
Norton AntiSpam
Norton Internet Security
LiveUpdate 2.7
Norton Internet Security 2006
Norton Protection Center
Norton WMI Update

Once you have completed that, reboot your computer. Then we will download and install a firewall.

Click here to download ZoneAlarm Firewall. Save it to your Desktop and then install it. Once it has completed, reboot your computer and you should be good to go.
