Ok, let's move on with the fix. :)

First,

Enable Windows Firewall
Click Start >> Run >> type Firewall.cpl, and then OK.
On the General tab, click On (recommended), and then OK.

Next,

Enable AVG Resident Shield, please:
* open AVG User Interface
* double-click on the Resident Shield
* Check the option "Resident Shield active"
* save the changes

Then,

Please download DAFT and save it to your desktop:
  • Double-click the daft.exe icon.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Select everything it is displaying there
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
  • Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.

Finally,

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Family\Application Data\PFP120JPR.{PB
    C:\Documents and Settings\Family\Application Data\PFP120JCM.{PB
    C:\WINDOWS\hpoins21.dat
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post back with a new DSS main log.

I'm sorry but I have some bad news.
One of the file identified is a Backdoor Trojan.
You have been a victim of identity theft.

  • Contact your bank and credit card company for contingency measures.
  • Do not use this system for secure transactions until we rid of the infection.
  • Using another (clean) computer, change the password of all accounts you may have accessed on this system (e.g. emails, forums, other accounts)

Then,

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Next,

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    c:\Windows\system32\sndcfg16.exe

Please post back with
- OTmoveit log
- SDfix log
- New HijackThis log

I suppose that could work.
But if you can, I would advise you to change them as soon as possible.
Remember, your accounts has been compromised.
You might be unable to log in to it if been hacked.

I believe these two are false positives. They belong to Win a Million program but I'll leave it up to you if you want to keep it or not. If you don't trust these files and would like to remove it.

Go to Control Panel then Add/Remove programs then uninstall "Win A Million".
Once uninstall is complete. You can then delete this folder.

C:\eGames

Next,

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Once done post back with a Hijackthis log.

Almost done.

How's your computer running?
Are there other issues you wish to address?
Still having slow performance?

It is definitely running better - occasionally a page will open slow or if I have more than one window open I can notice it, but still much, much better than it was.

Now the questions I am sure everyone asks:
Any way to tell where this came from and What can I do differently to prevent it from happening again?

With that said,

Congratulations, your log is clean! :)
We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First,

Download OTCleanit then save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on OTCleanIt.exe to run
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Next, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Then, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If you don't have one yet,

you should install a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly.
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Goodluck! :)

Also, some recommendations.

Your system is running on only 254 MiB of RAM.
The recommended RAM to have on Windows XP is 512MiB and the optimal size is 1 GiB.
If you have money to spare, I suggest upgrading your RAM to atleast a 512MiB.
This will help your system perform much better that it is now.

Next, run disk clean up but instead of using the one that came with windows.
Yo can use ATF cleaner for this. It much more efficient and user friendly.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Finally,

Download PageDefrag then save to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on PageDefrag.zip then select "Extract All"
  • Extraction wizard will open, just lick on "Next", extract to C:\.
  • Next, click Start >> Run >> Copy and Paste contents of codebox below.

    c:\pagedfrg -o
  • Press Enter then Reboot Computer.
  • During system boot it will attempt to defrag your paging files and Registry hives.

Hope this helps. :)
