The desktop background is now blue with a box in the middle of the screen. The box is divided in half, with yellow on the top with the words "Warning! Spyware has been detected on your computer" and blue beneath with the words "Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

In poking around just a little, in the Display Properties box only the tabe "Themes" "Appearance" and "Settings" are present.

I have seen other similar topics posted here that have been resolved (http://www.geekstogo...VED-t200532.htm), but thought I should show my specifics since every case may be different.

Thank you in advance for your assistance, I greatly appreciate it.

Welcome to GTG.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if found:

Viewpoint

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lphcak9j0ejaj] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcak9j0ejaj.exe
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcak9j0ejaj.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LPHCAK9J0EJAJ.EXE

1. Download combofix at http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe Save it to your Desktop before you run it.
2. Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Download OTMoveIt2 at http://download.blee...r/OTMoveIt2.exe
* Save it to your desktop.
* Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, right click on OTMoveIt2.exe and select Run as an Administrator).
* Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\blphcak9j0ejaj.scr
C:\WINDOWS\system32\phcak9j0ejaj.bmp
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

* Return to OTMoveIt2. Right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
* Click the red Moveit! button.
* A log of files and folders moved will be created in the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
* Close OTMoveIt2.

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Good job. Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If none, go to Start->Run, copy/paste in combofix /u and hit OK to remove it. You should be set to go.

greyknight17,

thanks so much. I followed your directions and received a "successfully moved" message from OTMoveIt2 for those four items. However, I could not locate, using "Search", the log file or a "Movedfiles" folder.

I successfully uninstalled combofix.

I have control over the display properties. All seems back to normal. I greatly appreciate your support and guidance.

Hi Adam, if you ran the Combofix removal before trying to locate that OTMoveIt2 folder, I think it will be removed automatically (just a cleanup procedure) :)

Glad everything is back to normal now.
