Hi,

On my computer at home, the internet connection (adsl) remains a couple of minutes, then modem goes in "training", then no signal for al long time, training again and a new connection (varying from 45 seconds up to 5 minutes)

The ADSL provider tested the line and there should be no problem at all.

Firewall & anti-virus is F-secure.
Microsoft antispyware is installed.

I think I'm in a kind of scan range. The few moments I have a connection, F-secure blocks "attacks". Sometimes it mentions 10 attempts of intrusion in one second.
Is it possible dat F-secure blocks the ADSL signal ?

I did a hijack run and you'll find the result below.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Steven.

If you think f-secure firewall is the culprit, just disable it and see what happens.
You should enable the built-in Windows firewall whilst the f-secure one is disabled or install another free one from here http://smb.sygate.co...pf_standard.htm

If your MODEM is going into training, then scan mode, the problem has nothing to do with your computer. The modem works independent of your PC.

You installed the filters on the other lines, right?

If the line was checked and the power dignal and noise adequate, I suspect a faulty modem.

Last week I borrowed an ethernet modem from a friend and replaced my eicon usb modem (3 yrs old) with it. The line was also instable.
So I thought there should be something wrong with the adsl line.
I asked my provider what is going wrong and he claims everything is ok.
All filters are installed. Sometimes I have during a short time a good and fast connection (dl 425 kB/s) but it gets interrupted everytime.
That's why I thought there should be a problem with my pc.
It's the first time in three years that there are problems.

@ pip22
During lunchtime at home, I uninstalled F-Secure and tried to install Avast4.
The computer hung while installing.
No time left, so the rest of problemsolving will be this evening.

Thanks for the advice(s)

If the modem is loosing sync, it is not your PC.

What you've done to troubleshoot screams ISP/line problem

When the phone company checked, was the modem synced or not?

Standard troubleshooting for this problem would be to connect your modem to the Network Interface Device (NID--the box outside the house where the phone line comes in....if you open it up, you will see a jack in there that is just a phone jack.

This eliminates the indoor wiring, anyway.

I don't now when or how they tested the line.
PC is on all the time, including my modem (everytime the connection fails it retries to re-establish the communication)
I asked a report, but still haven't recieved it.

This evening I will try your suggestion and make the plug into NID.

Thanks.

It's the line.
No adsl signal at all for the moment.
I'll have to contact the phone company again.
Thanks for the help.

Ask them specifically to do a 'Whoosh Test' on the line, also you could try phoning up your telephone company to do a check on the line, maybe get them to increase the 'gain' on the line, but that normally only applies to dialup.

No worries, I used to work for an ADSL reseller, we had a lot of problems getting our providers to test the line properly by doing a whoosh test on it, nearly always came back with a fault when they bothered to test it properly! Just a side thought, is it a USB modem?

It was an USB modem, I borrowed an ethernet modem from a friend and installed it.
Same story, no signal at all.

The provider is Tiscali (now Scarlet) and the phone company is Belgacom.

Tnx

Ha! What a surprise, Tiscali were the (un)helpful providers that I used to have to deal with!

What lights have you got on the front of the modem, and what make/model is it?

Yes indeed.
It's a pleasure to deal with those guys ...

Modem now is a Speedtouch 510 ethernet.
Only the light power on and LAN are on.

I think that model has an '@' symbol to show connectivity? Have you performed a hard reset on the modem yet? There should be a hole in the back of the modem that says 'Default' or 'Reset'. Turn the modem off, then hold a pen or something like that on the button in that little hole and turn the modem on. Leave for about 30 seconds and all lights should start to flash simultaneously. You may need to re-enter your username/password after this and try connecting again. Long shot but sometimes works and they may ask you to do this.

@ is indeed the DSL light.
I will try the hard reset.
I'm not at home now. I'll try it this evening.

I had contact with Tiscali.
They've never heard of a Whoosh test.
The one at the 'help'desk said he would forward my mail.

Thank you for your help.
