Please help. The log file below is on my mother's pc. She is having all sorts of problems lately. IE isn't working properly, the machine seems to be running tons of things in the background, and is very SLOW. She d/led a program called Ascentive last week thinking it would help solve any malware issues and . . . she shouldn't have. I ran all the utilities you asked me to first. Hi there and sorry for the delay, could I have a fresh look at the system

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

It sent an error message twice. I'm trying to find the log file to send it to you.

I'm staying here to see if I can fix it. I'll be here a while if you will.

The main and extra txt files are empty. The program did not ever run properly -- got error messages 3 times. It is that error log that I am trying to find.

Any other ideas? I'm still searching on the error log.

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

What error message were you getting ?

the error message was the standard one -- the one that asks if you want to send microsoft an error report -- does that make sense? ANyway I'm off to the the program you just posted about. brb.

Unfortunately I am on GMT in the UK and it is getting on for midnight now. I will check the log and create a fix when I come back online tonorrow afternoon (about 15 hours from now)

BTW - - - It did ComboFix did not reboot me automatically -- should I have done that? Also I did not see it install XP Recovery Console. Was that something I should have done in addition?

I'm very sorry. I didn't read the full message about running xp recovery concole first -- I just ran ComboFix. I normally read things. I hope I didn't mess anything up.

My mother's machine uses XP Media Center 2004 -- she does not have the disk. I'm not sure which version to download on Microsoft's page. Again -- very sorry.

I promise to do better tomorrowo and read EVERYTHING.

Hi again - Combofix will only re-boot if there is a stubborn file to remove, and the recovery console is a safety net during the cleaning process. It is nice to have but not totally essential.

I have had a look at Ascentive and it does appear to be a rogue programme, which appears to do more harm than good.

I would like a deeper look at your system to see if it has left anything behind, and we will then follow that up with a spring clean


Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - BotCheck
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

THEN

Whilst I am looking at the report

Download, install and run Tuneup Utilities 2008

Select Free up disk space

Select Unneccesary files and backups then clean

Select Maintain Windows

Run Drive Defrag

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Then run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Select Increase performance

Run the internet Optimiser to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click Increase performance then system optimizer to run system advisor
