Ive been trying to make my computer faster for a long time now, although it is not really slow, i like to have it fast, i try everything you can do to speed up your computer, this side of things i know what im doing. Ive defragged, used anti virus, anti spyware, cleared cached etc.

My computer is slow for some things, but others seems to be ok, for example turning on the computer and loggin on, can take a very long time, however general stuff like surfing the internet is very fast. Another time is always goes slow, is when my brother plays WoW, loading it up and closing it down, can take a fair amount of time.

I currently have a 512mb ram, how much would it benifit my computer if i upgraded to a 1Gb ram, is it worth it, and also if it is how do i know which ones will work for my computers?

Thanks for the help.

Hi there,

Welcome to Geeks to Go!

There are many different reasons why a computer may be running slow. You say you are trying to make your computer faster - did it ever used to be faster, and is now slow? Or you just want some more ooomph out of it?

What are some specific programs you have run? For a defragmenter, I love Jkdefrag - the link is in my signature. I find it much more effective than the built-in version Windows uses. Also, try ATF Cleaner to remove temporary files from your system, it may pick up on some more things.

How many programs do you run at once? How many start when your computer starts? If there are too many tasks running at once, it will definitely show strain on the performance of your computer. In this instance, it may be beneficial to upgrade the RAM.

Also, perhaps you can post your system specifications here? i.e. what processor you have, make/model of RAM, hard drive, graphics card, PSU, motherboard etc...

Cheers

Troy

EDIT: Forgot to add ATF Cleaner link... :)

Thanks for the quick responce.

Well even with only 512mb ram, when rebooted cleanly it does go really fast, however, theres ahuge difference in terms of memory from when i reboot and after. I have a huge amount of music, some very big games, like WoW, which i think is around 10Gb, also steam which i think is a lot. For things like startup, its not so much the logging in, as i diasbled most start up programmes but more actaullly booting up on that windoes screen.

I will take into account these software, and will try them now.

Dont know if this is the right info for you but here goes.

AMD Athlon XP 1500+
512Mb Ram
160GB
ASUS Radeon 9200SE

Hi there,

RAM upgrades are the best (and cheapest) way to speed up your pc. These days, games usually ask for 1gb of RAM minimum, so it would be a good idea to upgrade.

So, my recomendations are:
Get 1GB of RAM (around $40 or £20 from the right places) to bring you up to 1.5GB (thats planning ahead for the future), or get a new pc. Looking at your graphics card (9200SE), it wont be long before its completely outdated. Just guessing here, but is it an AGP card? If so, it narrows down the options a bit, but a nice Geforce 6800 or 7300 would probably do nicely. If your motherboard supports PCI-express, well, then you can chose almost anything you like!

Hi again,

All of the graphics cards mentioned in this thread are "outdated" - including the 6800 and 7300 series. Such is the speed of technology these days... :)

You can run an online test at http://www.crucial.com/ to identify what RAM your motherboard takes, how many slots are currently populated, and some upgrade suggestions. Crucial is a good manufacturer of RAM and would be a good choice, but you don't have to purchase from their website. Just write down the information and look elsewhere, if you wish.

To find out what graphics card slot your computer uses, you can look up the make and model number online, and find the specifications of the motherboard. If you don't know the make/model:

Download and install Everest Home Edition

Once installed, start Everest Home Edition and click on the Report button up the top.

From the box that appears, select the following at each page:
  • Next
  • Check the System Summary Only option
  • Next
  • Check the Plain Text option
  • Finish
Copy and paste the second section (with the title Summary) in your next reply.

Cheers

Okay that's good.

We didn't need quite all that information! But it helped us. We can see you have a PC Chips motherboard, and yes - you have an AGP slot.

Also you didn't mention what type of RAM you needed - did it tell you? Specifically, you should have some sort of information like this ----> "Your computer uses DDR PC-2700 RAM" or something like that.

After checking out the specifications of your system, there are many things you could upgrade to get a faster machine. If I were you, I would put all $$$ into savings for a new machine, as it wouldn't be worth spending any money on this current system.

Cheers
