I have been fighting a malware issue since early april, let me try to summarize the last 6

weeks of activity. The PC that is having a problem is at my friends house 3 miles from my

home, there is no internet access available at my house so I have a rig setup over there for

me to play COD 4 on. I have been having some malware problems on it for months since some

guests at my friends house clicked on something stupid back in the fall of 2007. I finally

got tired of fighting it during spring break this year and formatted and reinstalled windows

(xp pro wSP2) and reinstalled the games that I play (COD 4 and SWAT). I continued to to have

suspicious activity after the reload. I formatted and reinstalled again, I had been using

webroot spysweeper as my primary AV/MW solution but after reloading windows twice and still

having issues (blue screens and suspicious delays during browser use) I purchased Kaspersky.

After formatting and reinstalling windows and Kaspersky I still had random blue screen

issues and continued to have suspicious delays with browser use. Most of the time after I

had blue screens I would have windows report that that my Kaspersky was not running when

Kaspersky seemed to think all was fine. I formatted and reloaded again, every time after the

resulting blue screen at the end of the install the PC would not boot, 2 or 3 reboots later

it would let me into safe mode, after reaching safe mode then the PC would boot normally but

with delays and my AV/MW solution (Webroot or Kaspersky whichever was loaded) acting as if

it had been neutered. I determined that my MBR was infected . I changed to an old IDE HD,

formatted it and tried again, after everything seeming to be in order ( I used the same

drivers I had been using for 2+ years to remove any any variables) all seemed fine until I

connected to the net, loaded and played COD 4 , the next day during the Kaspersky scan it

blue screened, after that windows reported that Kaspersky was not providing Firewall

protection or AV protection even though Kaspersky seemed to think the opposite. Any scans I

had run previous to this had reported no errors. During the periods of time immediately

after the blue screens I used task manager to try to see what was using resources during the

suspicious activity time, it was often the CTHELPER process. I sought out and found a tool

to zero and LL format the drive, after which I proceeded to reinstall windows and the same

drivers that had been working fine for 2 years, only after I installed Java, and COD 4, and

connected and played COD 4 did the problem reoccur. I determined at that time that possibly

my COD 4 profile I had reinstalled may be an issue. I tried to zero and LL format my original SATA HD but

after which I was unable to get windows to start after a reload, I think I had zapped the

MBR on it and the Maxtor/Seagate diag tools refused to recognize it as a Maxtor/Seagate

device and refused to run. I picked up a another New Seagate HD and tried again, after

having the rig at my house for a week running memtest, looping futuremark demos etc to try

to see if memory or the vid card was having issues I was confident my HW was sound. I

brought the rig over here and ran the windows updates, updated Kaspersky and set it up to be

secure per the Spyware sticky at the pcper.com networking forums sticky(

http://forums.pcper....ad.php?t=388472 ) again. After connecting to COD 4 master

server and playing on my clans server the next day it blue screened during a Kaspersky scan

and proceeded to have suspicious activity and random blue screens again. Another Zeroing of

the drive (seagate tools at least recognized the new HD as a Seagate device) and another

reload of windows and drivers later, I did not reinstall my COD profile, I was able to try

again. Well after connecting to the COD master server and playing that night the same thing

happened again. Blue screens, followed by refusal to boot, safe mode, scans that show

nothing, boot to normal mode and the AV/MW solution acting neutered and random blue screens

after that. I have since followed all the instructions in your sticky, no scans show any any

infections and the logs that follow are the result of the Malwarebytes and Hijack logs.

Before I zero and LL format the drive again and reload windows for the 16th time since early

April I would like to know what exactly I am up against. I believe there is something that

is embeddeding itself on the MBR through port 28960 which is the only only port on my router

I open so I can play COD 4. It appears to try to kill windows as often as it can because if

I tolerate it I eventually end up with a OS that wont boot due to a missing HAL file or a

page fault blue screen over and over. Below are the results of the scans I ran tonight, the

other scans that I ran in your sticky showed no errors. If anybody has an idea of what it is

I am fighting I would really appreciate your help.

[edit] FWIW Kaspersky just caught the process CTAGENT trying to send data as I viewed a webpage immediatly after posting this .

Hello

Open notepad, click Format, uncheck Wordwrap

Download this tool to desktop:

http://www2.gmer.net/mbr/mbr.exe

Double click it & post the log it creates on desktop. (mbr.log)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

EDIT- I saw where the scanner noted the HD was allmost full, I checked and it does show that is allmost full. The only programs installed on this 80gig partition are ventrilo and COD 4 :scratchhead: I am looking to see what is taking up all that space...

EDIT2- It is the Documents and Setting folder that shows 72 MB of space being taken, but when I go to each folder within and check its size the sum total doesnt add up to 72
Thanks for your time :)

Your logs are clean

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTCleanIt to your desktop and run it
  • Click the CleanUp! button and let the program run

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
