The main problem I am having is that any program I use (IE, Firefox, Paint, Notepad..) shuts down at some point, anywhere from immediately after I open it to a few minutes or more. Some shut down faster than others. An example of the message I get is: "Firefox has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem." Then my options are to check online for a solution and close the program, or just close the program. The computer also runs painfully slow. It has Windows Vista Home Basic, it's an HP Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3 GHz 895 MB of RAM.

I tried to follow the steps in the HijackThis preparation guide but since everything shuts down, I didn't make much progress. I am also having problems using HijackThis. During the scan, I get this message:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts files.
If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able
to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourseld.
To do this, click Start, Run, and type:
notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press Enter.
Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file
as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot. For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis,
right click on the HijackThis icon, and choose "run as administrator'.

And, even though I clicked scan and save a log file, after the scan runs, I get a blank Notepad document and the message, "cannot find the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.log file. Do you want to create a new file?" And then whether I click yes or no, there is only the blank document, no log.

Please, can anyone help? I just don't know where to start. Thank you very kindly in advance.

Marla

EDIT: I just wanted to mention that this is my work computer and I will not be back to work on it or reply until Tuesday June 24. I greatly appreciate the help here! Thanks
