I'm not sure what is wrong with my computer. My desktop background changed to bright red with a virus warning. If I tried Control/Alt/Delete, I got a message stating that Task Manager had been disabled by the administrator. The "Run" feature was missing. When I could get to "My Computer", the "C" folder was not there. The web pages constantly changed. One of the scans I ran mention "Trojan Vundo".

I followed the directions on this site for "Before You Post a Hijack This Log", and most of the issues were resolved. I still get a lot of pop-up web pages. I do not have any virus protection at this time, because I have XP Service Pack 1, and everything I have tried will not install because they say Service Pack 2 is necessary. I had an older version of Norton Antivirus before, and bought the update, but it will not install. The instuctions on this site said not to install Service Pack 2 until it has been determined that the machine is clear.

I will post the "Hijack This" log.

Thank you for your help,

Lana

Firstly I will get you an AV that works, and after it has done the scans we will look to see what remains

First to remove Norton

Go to this page and download the relevant removal tool http://service1.syma...005033108162039

Run the programme, rebooting as necessary

THEN

Please go HERE and download avast! 4 Home Edition to your desktop. Locate the file that you just downloaded, double-click on the file to launch the installation of avast!

Click Next on the avast! Setup window and on the next window with the ReadMe File.
Now you will see the Legal Agreement, just click I agree, and then click Next to continue.

You will be prompted with Configuration window, make sure that you choose Typical configuration and then click Next. Click Next to the windows that will follow, when the installation will finish, you will be given an option to schedule a boot time scan, select No

Now you have to restart your machine, select Restart and then click Finish.

After you restart you will get a message about avast! it will give you the general "Hello and Thank you for choosing our Product." Also after you restart you will notice 2 new icons in the bottom right corner of the screen.

VERY IMPORTANT - after restarting, right click on the a in the taskbar and select Updating, then highlight and click Program.

You will get popup after its done updating. If avast! had to download anything for your computer you may get a message asking you to restart.

After you have updated avast! right click the small icon a in task bar and click Start Avast! AntiVirus

Click Program Registration and you will be taken to their website. Fill out the form and then check you e-mail. Once you get an e-mail from them (usually about 1 minute after submitting the form) copy and paste the serial they provided into the highlighted box. Then click ok.

After this, you will need to Schedule Boot-Time Scan with avast! Click on the little button placed up in the left corner, and select Schedule Boot-Time Scan. Read also this tutorial HERE it may make it easier to you to follow the steps.

Next, choose
  • Scan all local disks
  • scan archive files
  • click on Schedule
On the next dialog Operating system restart needed select Yes
Now avast! will restart your computer and start to scan before Windows fully loads.

IMPORTANT NOTE since your system has infections on it, avast! will give you dialog box with recommended actions, and options, please make sure if this happens, to click the Move to Chest button, and not to delete any reported files.

The boot log will be located here C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\AswBoot.txt

FINALLY

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Logs required : ASWBoot.txt and both DSS reports

OK then to work :)

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

THEN

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe
O2 - BHO: {0b91bc5a-7a6a-5cfb-2ba4-9f0a84a1299b} - {b9921a48-a0f9-4ab2-bfc5-a6a7a5cb19b0} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ouwfjlcl.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ WinINet] C:\I386\SERVICES.EXE
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

NEXT

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddeKUvut.ini2
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ouwfjlcl.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger(2)
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\eKnqYcdd.ini2
    C:\WINDOWS\egao.exe
    Purity
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

FINALLY FOR NOW

As an Avast user I need you to do the following before using Combofix
1. Right click the Avast Icon and select Program Settings...
2. On the left select Troubleshooting
3. Place a tick in Disable Avast self defense module
4. Select OK
5. Right click the Avast icon again and select Stop On Access Protection

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet. It is imperative that you install this as it will enable a system recovery in the event of problems

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

That looks much better, I have one registry entry to remove then I will do a deep search before we install SP2. I would also recommend uninstalling EWIDO as that is now long in the tooth and no longer updates

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\_WinINet

THEN

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - Desktop Components
    • Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
    • File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

When you have completed this and if you want to re-install Norton come back and I will talk you throught the steps. Until then reset the Avast self defense module by reversing the previous steps.. :)

Double click OTScanit once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompted by your firewall that OTScanit wants to contact the internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

First priority will be to get you updated to Service Pack 2 on this page you will have the option to download or order the Service Pack on CD. Your choice , but whichever option you choose ensure are malware free before installation SP2 does not play well with an infected system, before installation pop back here for a quick health check.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Keep safe :)

I did the OT Scan Cleanup, and created the clean restore point. I tried to run the Disk Cleanup, but it brings up a window that says it's compressing the files. I left it on all day today, and it never got past that point. I checked the processes that were running, and Cleanmgr.exe was using 99%. It didn't stop when I closed the window. I tried restarting my computer a couple of times, but it still does the same thing.

I will check back to see if you answer, but after tonight, I won't be back at this computer for about a week. I'll get right bak at it then!

Thanks again!

That is quite likely if you have never compressed unused files before

You can untick that section (..compress files not used recently - or something like that )
