We have a home wireless network set up. We have the main computer connected via cable modem to Comcast broadband. We must have more computers trying to access than the host can handle because every day I have to reset the modem so one or another computer can get online. I think they set it up initially for three computers (all desktops - in the house). Nowe, however, we have several laptops that we try to connect and we always have trouble and can't get an IP address. We have six people living here now and we are all trying to get online. Can you please tell me how to release more IP addresses so I don't have to reset this modem all the time? thanks!

Do you have a router?

You will need a router so that you can connect more computers to the modem for Internet access. If your router doesn't have enough ports, you will need a switch.

If some computers can go wireless, then a wireless router would solve your problem without needing a switch.

Yes, we have routers for wireless access. We are not trying to connect additional computers to the host cable modem. The problem is that when we try to connect wirelessly we cannot get online until I go to the cable modem and reset it; thus releasing the IP addresses again. I think the problem is that we need to release more IP adresses from the host compute so that the additional laptops won't be continuously competing for the usage of the available IP addresses. Do you know how to release additional IP addresses? thanks!

Go to your router's page and you can see there something called a DHCP pool. Adjust the number of IP addresses/users you need.

Hope that solves it. :)
