I have tried several times to go to the chat, but keep getting an error. I would really like to join the chat and get to know the people who run the site and work here. I think the chat is a great idea and would like to join in. I have attached a screen shot of the error.

It's odd that your having problems with the nickname, it is not registered on WyldRyde (the IRC server).

You could try and connect through an IRC Client such as mIRC - a tutorial was written here by therock247uk.

steve* is not a allowed nickname as we have a staff member on Wyldryde well root admin who has steve as there real name.

So how do I get a nickname to use the chat applet on the site?

You just need to pick a nickname that doesn't include the name Steve. You can use Guest to connect and then change your nick once you have joined by typing /nick newnickhere.

It won't let me do that. I can't change the name at all.

You probably need to clear your cookies, or at least any for wyldryde.org

I have tried that several times in the past as well. I emptied my cookies like 5minutes ago and tried again just now.

The Java chat applet is handy but not the best way to connect. I would suggest you get an IRC Client like IceChat or mIRC and connect by following the instructions here.

Alternately, at the bottom of the chat applet is a box labelled "Change nick to:" which you can use to change your nick and then click the Connect button at the top.
