I ran the Navilog1 shortcut and entered 2 on the menu. The computer then shut down and re-booted back to my desktop. But I never saw a ***Clean finished...*** message and I can find no new document titled cleannavi. I even did a search of my computer for a file with those words in it but nothing turned up. Where did I go wrong?

Pharm74, how is your computer running now? Is it still having the issues you originally had? If not, then we'll consider this one closed. But first, we need to do some cleaning up.

STEP ONE
Please download OTCleanIt from here.
  • Once you have it downloaded, double click the icon.
  • When the program starts, just click the button labeled "CleanUp!"
  • If the program asks you to reboot, please do so.

STEP TWO
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.
(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Also, The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • SUPERAntiSpyware - A powerful tool which can search and annihilate malware that makes its way onto your system.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • Avast! Anti-Virus - A free for home use anti-virus program.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

Gravity Gripp,
I haven't had any problems for several days now. It appears that the difficulty I was having with my browser being highjacked has been eliminated! I want to thank you for your time and effort in helping me with this task. I've followed your suggestions and downloaded the programs that I didn't already have. Hopefully I can avoid any future problems by religiously running these programs on a regular basis. Thanks again for your efforts and I'll be sure to suggest geeks2go to anyone who has reached a roadblock on their system.

  • JKDefrag - A disk defragmenter and optimizer for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista. It is completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead and has several optimization strategies. After downloading the zip file, just extract JKDefrag.exe to your desktop and double click.
