hijackthis does not remove any software...it merely deletes references to the software in the registry that cause the software to start when Windows starts.

You can FIX the items and it will disable them at start up. You can then restore them using hijackthis, provided that you have saved hijack to its own folder.

Go here:
C:\MY DOCUMENTS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAMS\If you have ever run hijackthis, you will see a folder here called BACKUPS.

Inside you will see files named things like this:

backup-20050429-133638-418

These are the settings that HIJACKTHIS removed. You can restore any SETTING (hijackthis does not delete files at all), but starting HIJACKTHIS and choosing VIEW LIST OF BACKUPs.

You can select and restore these backups, re-enabling the programs....

Hey Gerry,

I did all of that, and when I rebooted, "like you stated" they will not automatically start @ windows start up. :)

BUT... why would you not want these programs not to start @ windows start up. ;)

check and fix all of these, then reboot, then see if you can access the sites

AND then access the sites??? :tazz: Without protection???

I did a Ctrl/Alt/Delete after rebooting, and they were not running, so why in the world would I want to go ONLINE to a website, without any protection.

Thats nuts...

I dont mean to be sounding like I'm jump'n all over ya, but who wants to go ONLINE without protection???

So I just turned them back on... And tried the Cinergy site again, and still, no luck.

If any of this helps requires me to go ONLINE without protection, then I guess hubby will have to drive to pay the dang bill.

If this is all you have for me, then thanks for the help... But no thanks on going online, viewing websites, opening pages, etc. without my protection up and running...

PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong...

I simply want to establish whether one of these programs is malfunctioning...........................................

Listen. Either take my advice or don't.

I have every intention of re-setting them up again when we are done.

You are trying to connect to SECURE sites when you pay a bill...the server needs to AUTHENTICATE YOU TO ENSURE YOU ARE WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE.

I am not asking you to get on the internet and surf [bleep] sites.

I want you to turn off the programs for 5 minutes and go to one known site and test a connection.

If you still cannot connect, we can rule these programs out and move on.

An anonymizing program can hide your identity and the site you are trying to reach will not authenticate you, thus no connection

Your firewall could be blocking a critical port, port 443, if you hit one OK message one time too many.

The antivirus program is a long shot and I am less concerned, but since we are turning things off anyway, I just want to quickly move on....

That was rude...

I never indicated that I was NOT taking your advise, but when you get a hold of someone like (ME) that knows nothing about puters, how they work, etc. then you will get someone freaked out... .

I just have never been told to go online, anywhere without protection.

You or (I) always hear that you should have your protection on at all times, no matter what your doing online...

But no reason to be rude...

But anyway, I will go and do this now SINCE, you explained to me that it will be safe.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but so far you said you don't mean to be jumping all over me, but then you do, call me nuts, then if this is all you have for me, then thanks but no thanks.....with a sarcastic reference to sending the hubby off to pay the bills.

Pardon me, but I thought you were basically blowing me off when all I am trying to do is help.

I suppose that if we were in the same room this kind of communication lapse would not be an issue, but it seems to be that we have a trust issue.

Bulletin board communication works or doesn't because the person asking for advice trusts the person who is giving it. I've helped hundreds of people in the last month on this site and over the years thousands more.

I'm juggling about a half dozen help threads right now, and this thread has become like pulling teeth. It is not my intent to put you in jeopardy, or be rude, but you clearly do not trust my advice and I don't know what else to do.

I am fairly frustrated right now and that is why this coming off wrong.

Enable Profile Assistant

Use SSL 3.0

Warn about invalid site certif.

Warn if changing betwen secure and not secure mode

Warn if forms submittal is being redirected

And we both misunderstood each other, and I'm just an idiot when it comes to puters.

The guys from when I started here, well it was just me and like 4 others.
They gave me this name "Resident Blonde" ;)

I have already lost allot of information from sending this puter to a tech in town, he was suppose to have saved all my info, but do to him NOT KNOWING what he was doing, I lost everything...

Not saying I'm compairing you, just bring point that I dont know anything about puters, and I cant loose things again or take the chance... So just saving myself.

Bought :tazz: a cd burner, just waiting for it in the mail... :)

Thanks Gerry, and I'm sorry to if I came across wrong towards you.

You know what it is...the moderator/staff thing...I assumed you were being difficult because I expected a certain level of technical saavy with those positions.

This is not meant to demean your contributions--everyone works very hard to keep the boards humming along in various ways, but it never occured to me that you weren't as saavy as I thought.....

Well...that looks OK....so, I need to think this....and stop addressing this as a browser issue and start thinking from a different perspective....basically, blame AOL.....

I loathe AOL because of the proprietary way they run their network which causes other issues....I need to go out on a call, so let me think on it and get back.....

In the meantime, one last chance that AOL and IE are sharing a setting, download FIREFOX from mozilla, install that and check the site again....

AOL...grumbles...

;)

but it never occurred to me that you weren't as savvy as I thought.....

;)

Oh My Gosh... :tazz:

not savvy with the inner of puters and how things work or malfunction :) ...
I only know where I malfunction... :)

BUT ..... :)

I have build my own 3D Architect of my house on the puter, and what it is going to be like, the wiring, construction, remodeling, etc.

I already raised the corner of the house and laid my subfloor down in the kitchen, did some plumbing work, and this summer, I am ripping out and laying a new roof as well as raising it from the org. height in the kitchen.

And yes, I'm doing this work. :)

I work on my own trucks, rebuilt my 318 from my 77 dodge, and work on mothers CAR :) ... **just a truck gal**

But BLONDE I AM @ computers... :)

But yeah, the guys knew where to place me best... :)

Ok... give me a few seconds... I had Firefox once before, dont care for it actually, but lets give it a hoot... :)

I loathe AOL because of the proprietary way they run their network which causes other issues

Well, I know that AOL has been the best ***sigh*** dial up service provider I have ever found. But the only issue that I have heard of that AOL causes is the Winsocks...

OK... one other issue... No, not prejudice, but when you call and buy there service you get an English speaker, when you cancel there service you get an English speaker, you want help for the services, you get transferred to Africa and India  ***sore spot for me there***

And then they all speak to you like a robot, just reading from there screen...

But back to the COMPUTER SAVVY issue... Well, I tried to go threw the tutorials with TC, but that was a month or two ago, I signed up, gave my info and e-mail etc...

Then they e-mailed back stating that I needed to change my e-mail addy, so I did, and replied with the new addy, and never heard from them since :)
But now, with the festivals coming up, I am to busy for that now.

I have allot of inventory to make up, and to find a NICE tent for me to sell my items in.

So, TC and the tutorials will have to be at another time... :)

OK... did that, and this is what happend...

I first went threw the search bar and typed (www.cinergy.com) and then the search showed Cinergy.com...

Clicked and after ***seemed like 5 minutes**** I got this warning...

ALERT
The operation timed out when attempting to contact www.cinergy.com

So I tried the addy bar, and same waiting period, I got the same Error message...

Ok... NEXT !!!! :)
