Hi all,
I came to this site a few months ago to solve some malware issues. We ran some scans, cleared some bugs, and I thought I was in the clear. Trouble is, since then, my computer is slower than ever - to the point where multitasking is a distant memory. As of this post, with only (to my knowledge) Firefox and AVG running, my cpu usage spiked up to 70% before erratically falling back to around 40-50%. My current antivirus program (which I installed after final cleanup) has not once found an issue, yet the computer continues to run like molasses. I was curious as to whether or not this may have to do with some temp files that may still be taking up space on my harddrive after the last cleanup. I was hoping I could start fresh with one of you guys, maybe get a second opinion on the matter. For old times sake, here's a copy of my latest HJT scan, in case t might reveal anything. I run on Windows XP with service pack 2 installed, and for some reason, i think its pro, not home version.

Thanks in advance guys! (Also, it might be of interest to note that I recently messed with my host file, as per one of your staff member's request. I'm not quite sure what I may have done wrong, but it seems to have had a negative effect on my internet connection on occasion, i.e.: ill just get a blank window the first couple times i open firefox)

Hi caricaturd

welcome to geekstogo :)

sorry to keep you waiting. lets do a deeper scan of your machine for me to analyse.

(if your problem has already been resolved, could you just let me know so that i can move onto other logs to help others, thanks)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

you may need to post the logs over 2 replies to ensure all the information is posted.

lastly, the GMER scan didn't produce a log to the best of my knowledge. It finished doing what it was doing and never brought up any sort of txt file. Sorry to say I haven't been able to finsih the kapersky scan yet. I tried to finish it yesterday, but it was taking forever. I should have this last log back to u right after the 4th of July, which, judging by your username, you could care less about. anyway, thanks for the help so far, man. i'll get back to u with more right after holiday

no problem, i will be here :)

you are correct, the 4th July is not a holiday in the UK :)

gmer sounds as if it did not find anything, so thats ok.

the kaspersky scan can take a while to download and scan........can take over 2 hours on a bad day.

Scan process completed.

Also, I recently used a registry scan program advertised on geekstogo. it came up with a lot of errors. any chance this is whats slowing down my system?

nothing jumping out so far, what little malware there was on your machine has been cleared in those scans.

Also, I recently used a registry scan program advertised on geekstogo. it came up with a lot of errors. any chance this is whats slowing down my system?

could you tell me the name of the program you used.

in this post we will update your java, clear out your hostfiles (that is a long shot) and then try some tricks.

====STEP 1====
Clearing the Java cache:
there is a nice set of instructions http://www.java.com/.../5000020300.xml

  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel and then the Java Control Panel will appear.
  • Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files and the Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click Delete Files and the Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
  • Make sure all three boxes are ticked: Downloaded Applets, Downloaded Applications and Other Files and then Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window. Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
  • Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

====STEP 2====
Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
  • Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click on "File Handling".
  • Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
  • Click OK on the Confirmation box.
  • Click on "Make Read Only?"
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
====STEP 3====
could you uninstall your AVG antivirus (via add/remove programs in the control panel) and then re-install it.

there is a free version (if you are using that) here

====STEP 4====
this page http://users.telenet...owcomputer.html gives some good ideas on how to improve the efficiency of your machine and has one or two useful links to help your further.

In your next reply could i see:
1. the name of the Registry scan program you used
2. how your machine is running now?
