1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. I need you to move HijackThis to its own folder so that nothing gets deleted by mistake. The easiest way for you now would be as follows:

. Right Click on your Desktop
. Scroll down the menu to "New"
. Left click on "Folder"
. Name Folder "HJT"
. Drag current HijackThis icon from your desktop into the HJT Folder
. Run HJT from there.

4. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Hi monizuki

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Make double sure to disable Spybot's Tea Timer for now, as it can interfere with the fixing of problems.
Open Spybot and and make sure you are in Advanced mode (check it in the 'Mode' menu). Go to the Tools section and click resident and then uncheck the box for Tea Timer.

Then, reboot
---------------------------

1. Download and install System Security Suite from: HERE. Extract it from the zip file into a folder of its own. DO NOT RUN IT UNTIL SO INSTRUCTED

2. Download and install a 14-day free version of Ewido Security Suite from:HERE. Update its definitions. DO NOT RUN UNTIL SO INSTRUCTED.

3. REBOOT into Safe MODE

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

4. Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

5) Go to start > run and type: sc delete SvcProc

6. Go to start > run and type: %WinDir%\Nail.exe /FullRemove

7. Doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'

8. REBOOT into NORMAL MODE when prompted.

9. RUN and perform a FULL SCAN with EWIDO.

10. REBOOT your system.

11. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

I don't know what happened, but I've encountered several problems. First, I got to the step where I run sss.exe and after checking all the boxes and clicking clear selected items it gives me an error that reads "access violation at address 0476168 in module sss.exe. Read of address 0000000" So then, so that I could type where I was at, I rebooted in normal mode, I found that after loging in, it would flash the desktop picture and then go back to the log in screen. I can't even get into my computer on safemode with networking. So now, my computer is useless and I'm on another computer we have on a network. SO what now?

Another critical symptom caused by this malware: This malware modifies the Userinit area in the registry (replacing the userinit.exe with wsaupdater.exe) and Ad-Aware (with a particular definition update) removes the wsaupdater.exe file from the system, thus causing the Logon - Logoff loop. That is, when you login to Windows, the 'loading personal settings" verbose will appear, but suddenly it will logoff. This issue was documented clearly by Lavasoftusa in it's Lavahelp Knowledgebase.

Here is the solution to the logon - logoff issue in Windows XP.

Enter the Recovery Console

Boot the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In the first screen when the Setup begins, read the instructions press "R" (in the first screen) enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other drive-letter where you've installed XP)

Type the following command and press Enter.

CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)

COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

Quit Recovery Console by typing EXIT and restart Windows.

You'll be able to login successfully as you've created the wsaupdater.exe file (now, a copy of userinit.exe)

Now, change the USERINIT value in the registry (see Phase II in this page) and change it accordingly.


NOTE If you don't have a Windows XP CD-ROM, you need to use Windows XP Setup floppy disks to enter the Recovery Console"

ok, here's a simple question which may answer the big picture here...the original Xp is not in my possession, which was a proffessional, and I borrowed one that is Home edition. Those files you were talking about are not on this one. I would expect on this level they'd be the same but apparently not. Is home edition not going to work for me?
