I am very technologically challenged, and I am helping a friend order a new computer through Dell (hers was 10 years old and finally kicked the bucket). She has no access to internet, so I am ordering for her. She has been on dial up with AOL but is getting a DSL line for the new computer. I do not know if I need to order the computer with a modem or not? Any suggestions? I think it will be cheaper to go ahead and order than to add one later. Any thoughts?

Hi Pbyrd,
I don't think Dell takes any money off if the computer you are ordering comes with a modem and you chose to not have it installed. Your friend will not need the modem if she is going to use a DSL line. She will connect through the network port on the computer. Are you buying a desktop or laptop computer??

I just bought a Gateway a month ago and it came with the Modem already.

It seems that companies are still generous to offer the modem cause its only like 5 bucks now a day anyway and all mobos usually have Onboard LAN.
