Just got a call from my mom with computer troubles. (Odd since I just signed up here today.) Her old windows os (N09-00560) with 128 RAM and a cele1700g-fc-r has just bit the dust.

Symptoms: Machine was running a music cd when it went silent and the monitor screen went black. No response to the keyboard or mouse. A hold on the on button produced a reboot that only started the fan and then within 3 seconds produced a tone (boooooooooop) which lasted about 3 to 5 sec. and then a silent period of about the same duration, followed by another cycle of this which continues until madness is produced in all persons in the room ...or on the phone.

What is the most likely cause? That is, what failed and what might be damaged?

The symptoms you describe are not specific enough to suggest any one problem, it might be the power supply, the motherboard, a memory failure, just about anything at this point. What is the model of the system, what operating system is one it.

Some brands use very cheap power supplies which fail early and often take out the whole system, so knowledge of the brand and the brand of the power supply would be useful. Also, if it's an older unit and not properly maintained dust can cause serious heating problems.
