Not sure if I completely cleaned the system? [CLOSED]

Suddenly my computer started acting strangely (I'll explain the symptoms in detail) and I figured I have a virus and/or some kind of malware. It turned out I had a while cocktail of nasty stuff running on the machine. Here's what happened.

Explorer would shut down immediately after the OS boots up and I start using the system. The only thing left on the screen was the wallpaper and the mouse pointer. If I tried to open anything before explorer shuts down it would give me the following error:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

The remove button for ALL the programs in the "programs and settings" menu in the Control Panel is also missing (except for the programs installed after the cleanup).

I put spybot and on a flash drive and ran it thru the command prompt and deleted multiple instances of vundo. After I restarted it found more vundo traces. This repeated multiple times so I figured I need something else to clean it up completely. I used SUPERAntiSpyware, and WebRoot Spy Sweeper as suggested in different posts round the net. SUPERAntiSpyware cleaned 9 instances of vundo some keyloggers and some other stuff. WebRoot did not find any instances of vundo, but found a keylogger and a bunch of tracing cookies.

I don't know if I have removed everything from the system or it still has something.

Here's the log from HiJackThis:

Hello

Please download RUNSCANNER to your desktop and run it.
  • When the first page comes up select Beginner Mode
  • On the next page select Save a binary .Run file (Recommended) then click Start full scan at the top.
  • At this time Runscanner.exe may request access to the Internet through your firewall please allow it to do so, it will then run for two or three minutes.
  • On completion it will ask for a location to save the file and a name. It will do this for both the .run file and the log
  • Call the file "Select a file name here" and save it to your desktop. You will see the .run file on your desktop. Please zip the .run file by right clicking and selecting send to Zip file

Then upload that as an attachment in your next post.

Hello

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSServer] "rundll32.exe" C:\Windows\system32\urqOGxuV.dll,#1
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\Windows\System32\kdxxi.exe] C:\Windows\System32\kdxxi.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingA6334] command /c del "C:\Windows\System32\kdxxi.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingC8356] cmd /c del "C:\Windows\System32\kdxxi.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingB6048] command /c del "C:\Windows\System32\kdxxi.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingD9877] cmd /c del "C:\Windows\System32\kdxxi.exe"

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.

    C:\Windows\System32\kdxxi.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\urqOGxuV.dll
    purity
    EmptyTemp
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Your logs are clean

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

There is a problem when I get to the point of creating a system restore point:

-- if I type the "rstrui.exe" command, the window that opens up allows me only to restore the system from a restore point, not to create one
-- if I try to create a restore point from the properties menu (right-click on Computer) I get the following error "Cannot create the scheduled task for the following reason: The request is not supported. (0x80070032)"

I've completed all the steps that you've outlined. The problem with creating system restore point was that the task scheduler has been disabled during the cleanup process and w/o it the system restore cannot run.

I greatly appreciate all your help. I am going to donate some money to you because you help has been invaluable.

I am not sure how many similar cases you handle per day and am not sure how appropriate my 2 questions would be, but I was wondering 1) how many infections/malware etc. did my machine have (it's not a big deal, just wondering) and 2) is any of the malware that you cleaned known to be used for stealing username/passwords for credit card/bank accounts - i.e. should I be concerned and change all the passwords? There was already one attempt for unauthorized use of one of my credit cards about 2 months ago and I still have no idea how it happened. Maybe the answer is in one of the many log files that I sent you!?

Thanks again.

P.S. I guess it's a good idea to send you the logs of my laptop too. Let me know what should I start with.

Post in the Windows Vista forum about your System Restore problem

1) how many infections/malware etc. did my machine have (it's not a big deal, just wondering)

You had quite a bit of Vundo

is any of the malware that you cleaned known to be used for stealing username/passwords for credit card/bank accounts - i.e. should I be concerned and change all the passwords

Nope this infection doesn't steal passwords. We would warn you if it did. Your PC hasn't been compromised. Vundo just gives you pop ups

Maybe the answer is in one of the many log files that I sent you!?

Well hard to tell since it was two months ago, I don't see anything in your logs that are responsible. It may be a good idea to change your passwords to be safe

Sure post a HijackThis log from your laptop
