I have a Toshiba Tecra laptop. Recently, when starting up my PC, the screen is extremely dark. So dark to the point that I can just barely see the icons in order to shut it down again. It is definitely not a problem regarding me changing the screen brightness by accident. Once or twice it booted up as usual but the last few times I have tried -- it is very dark again. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the LCD backlight is either going bad or the power connection to the backlight is going bad. That would require service! If it is still under warranty, call the manufacturer and get them to fix it. If not, fixing this would require you to take the laptop almost completely apart to even test it.

I appreciate the quick reply. Unfortunately, the warranty is no longer valid! So, you're saying it will require some major testing just to determine the problem, huh? Oh boy. I wonder what I should do now... After all the problems I have had with that PC, I bought a little Panasonic about 18 months ago. I swore that I would NEVER go without a backup PC again. It was a wise decision indeed. I rely on both PCs tremendously. I suppose I should spend the money to have it checked and then decide what to do with it when I get an estimate. Thanks again.

I would bet on it being the LCD backlight power connection being bad, but it's definitely the backlight in some way, shape or form.
