I started the OS's own defragger at 0730 this morning. It is now almost 12 hours later and it is still running. is this normal? How long can I expect to be kept waiting?

System info-

Dell XPS210
250 gb HDD
Intel 2.13 ghz core 2 duo
RAM- 2gb

Hello fuzzy4130,

Depending on how fragmented your hard drive is, the defragging process can take anywhere from a few minutes (very unlikely) to a few hours to complete (much more likely). To me 12 hours is to much.

A lot will also depend on what's running at the time. Programs that access the disk frequently will cause Defrag to start over again, to a point where potentially no defragging is actually happening.

Hello Dwight,

I should not recommend that the Beta version. By downloading, installing or using this software or any portion thereof is at your sole risk.

THE SOFTWARE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO COMPUTER SYSTEM OR OTHER DEVICE OR LOSS OF DATA.

Thanks for the responses folks.

There were no other programmes running in the background, though I was not operating in 'Safe Mode'. The defrag finally finished sometiume in the early hours of this morning. I found that it was finished at about 3:00 a.m.

Due to access issues (kids hogging the computer) I hadn't defragged this year!

Is there another 3rd party deffrager out there that isn't a beta?

Defrag time depends on a number of variables such as number of fragments, number and size of fragmented files, available disk space, disk speed etc. and it's difficult to predict.

With the older manual or scheduled defraggers which can be quite resource intensive, it's best to leave the system alone until the defrag is finished, but it can be quite a hassle. If you don't want to waste time defragging and 'locking' down the system solely for defrag, then consider automatic defragmenters. These are quite new, and run in the background, defragging in 'real-time' using idle system resources. This means you can continue to use the PC and the defrag will automatically suspend/resume in the background according to resource usage. Defrag times become immaterial then.

Thanks again for the replies. I have downloaded and run auslogics defragger and it was much quicker. I also ran their registry defragger.

Arborman- have you any recommendations re automatic background defraggers?

Thanks.

Have you tried the latest version of Diskeeper? Its worth checking out, I'd certainly recommend it among the commercial programs.

Well, diskeeper is't free.

You can use UltraDefrag. It's a very fast open source program.
