My favorite bartender is going back to school and needs a laptop. I have a Dell Latitude that I just fired up for the first time in 3-4 years. It went to a setup reminder to set the clock, etc., which I did, though it makes me think the internal battery is DOA. It boots fine. I'd like to install a new 100g HD and replace any internal battery that it might need and install Windows XP if possible. Its using 98 right now. I've seen other threads on here that seem to say its ok to use a 100g and that XP will work. I saw that another poster in a similar situation from 3-4 years ago said newegg was the best and cheapest and quickest shipper. I'll also have to replace the main battery so a source for that would help, as well. While I'm at it, I'll see if I can upgrade the memory, too. Any thoughts on a source for any of this and any predictable pitfalls with this plan? One post said the Latitudes were probably standard IDE HD's, is this true? Are there drives that might be preloaded with Windows XP?

Any help appreciated.

The internal battery is buried inside the cases and you will need to split the top and bottom cases to replace it. Also you may not find the exact internal battery you need. I have already done that with much frustration. Splitting the 2 computer halves is not for the lighthearted, it can be frustrating at times if you have no experience. I would buy a new battery for it and let the dell run on that battery. As long as you take care of it and charge it regulary you won't have any problems.

Yes, NewEgg is the best for prices and shipping, but there are others that come close to them.

You need to check what memory you can run in the laptop. Some can run only PC100 memory. Also you may be limiter on how much memory the laptop will see.
