Hello,

As an above average malware assasin, I've been working on my brothers previously owned HP Windows XP SP3 computer for days now. After running all of the best online scans, and removing numerous infections, I've cleaned everything from adware to zlob already. Java\byteverify.js infected this system originally about a week ago, and ever since I've been checking forums and carefully!! running scans. The scans successfully removed Dc1.lnk and Dc2.exe (one was .exe and one was .lnk, can't remember which was which) yesterday, and today my brother went to reinstall realplayer on his system, because I gave him the green light, considering all scans, including rootkit scans finally showed 0 results. Then after he installed realplayer, and rebooted, his desktop had completly disappeared, except the picture in background. Hearing this I was concerned, and promptly drove over to take a look. I then used malwarebytes to find and remove dc3 and dc4 (again one was .exe and one was .lnk) Dvpapi I thought I had removed and then it reared it's ugly head today.
Long story short, I searched for dvpapi within his registry, and discovered a protected folder in the controlset\enum\root labeled legacy_dvpapi . I then informed him that this could be the rootkit center of his problem. I then advised him that I could attempt to remove this folder by hand, but at this point, I'm not about to fumble the ball on the 1 yard line. Please help me remove this problem, possible rootkit infected XP, that I have worked so maticulously with. I am now posting a complete safe-mode version of HJT, and will re-post with a normal mode HJT this first chance I get tomorrow.
I've put so much time in to this and I'm moving in a few days, so I need some help so that I can get ready for my move.

I wish I had the normal mode HJT up already, but they were going to bed so I had to roll out. I wanted to give f-secure one last chance to find any rootkit infections, so I began the online scan in safe mode, but then the more I thought about it, I came offline completly, ran HJT in safe mode, and posted it up before leaving. It's completly off now until tomorrow, I'll start with the HJT i presume. I also wish I had an original HJT to show from when I first started, but I had no idea what all I was about to encounter. I fully understand that there are no guarantees when it comes to backdoor.trojans and rootkits. But surely you viruskillas wont pass this one up!

Let's just say if I had a clue that I'd get a response tonight, I'd have got that HJT up on here!!! I'd still be at his house working on it!
But it's turned off for now so I'll let it go until tomorrow. Thank you for your response. I have total patience and confidence, were gonna kick some butt in due time.

For any guests reading this thread: I just want to say that my personal advice is to follow the beginning instructions carefully that are given by this forum's Technial staff. Why try and fix the computer by yourself when you can get quick, and excellent help? You'll learn all you could want to learn plus more, while being guided by some of the best virus killas in the world. I only tried cleaning my brother's XP because I've been cleaning pc's ever since they first came out with DOS. So refer to LTAngelic's informational signature directly above, and click on please read this!

My brother's girlfriend unsuspectingly clicked on the antivirus2008 link that popped up a few days ago as a start to one infection. Trying to remember what else I have removed already, there was a zlob downloader, a bagle worm, trojan.tooso, I also removed brainscan, java which I reinstalled upto ver. 5.0, and I pre-cautiously removed safari by apple, and google desktop search because their contents made me suspicious. There was a few more but that's all I can remember right now. The XP's about 10years old, 4 other users had it infected already when my brother bought it, so with there being close to a million files on the computer, I've probably removed an additional million files. Oh and I'll also add that upon cleaning this XP last year I detected a rootkit, began snipping at it's heels and his windows went down so we opted for the affordable help of a local so called former hp tech. He got things up and running by fixing the hp recovery drive and installing some python components that I have left untouched. Can't remember which rootkit it was, but I added this on here because it was too hard for me to say how good a job this guy did. Once windows was back up, everything looked good to me so we went with windows live one care until his subscription ran out. He was running Avast at the time of infection, and he quickly switched to bitdefender once he realized avast wasn't perfect, I then removed bitdefender in the process of my work and talked him into Mcafee special edition from aol.

I'm ready when you are! I noticed norton internet security listed on the uninstaller list. This i found strange because there should be no Norton on this system. so i opened up the control panel, clicked on show updates, and Norton is nowhere on the list. So I'm guessing it's just up there from when i uninstalled norton some time ago.

Hey Jeff,

Sorry for the delay, the expert looking at my log has been really busy.

Your logs don't look too bad, we'll need to do deeper scans to know what's on your computer.

Please follow my instructions in the order they were given, and print out a copy of it as you may not have access to the forums during the fix.

Please temporarily disable your Mcafee Anti-virus as it may interfere with the fixing.

1) Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Old versions of Java have vunerabilities that can compromise your computer, please do the following:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
2) Run ATF Cleaner to clean up temporary files

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for Windows 98/ME/2K/XP and VistaDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3) Run VundoFix 5

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

4) Remove entries with HijackThis

Please re-open HijackThis and Do a System Scan only. Put a check next to the entries below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...a...&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.h...a...&pf=desktop
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {381FFDE8-2394-4f90-B10D-FC6124A40F8C} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

5) Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

6) Run Deckard's System Scanner

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Next reply (please include):

McAfee Security Center would not open through the run command with windows open in safe mode or normal mode. So I opted to stop the McAfee related services that we're running, while offline, and download and run McAfee removal tool straight from McAfee. We will switch back to zonealarm for firewall on this pc when it is cleaned up. I love McAfee on my Vaio, but it's just too big for this HP XP used computer. Java 6 would not run still, so I proceeded to run ATF cleaner. After that was done I ran Vundofix5. The scan found no infected files so I closed the application. Malwarebytes updates real quick so I went online just long enough for the signature updates. Still found nothing with Malwarebytes, still no Java 6 window opening at all. I'd remove the java 2 versions from control panel and leave java 5.0 for now, but with no desktop I can't find control panel from the HP's task manager. I have not tried running explore.exe, until we know we're clean.
Not sure if this will show in the logs yet, but I notcied some files while malwarebytes was scanning labeled SET1A3.tmp, SET1A4.tmp, .....5.tmp,...C,D,B0.tmp etc. All have SET in front and it appears to be almost 100 files worth. I tried copying the properties but no luck, but it says the version is 6.0.2900.5512, Description: Shell Browser UI Library Copyright Microsoft. I've noticed these before I believe they may need to be removed, so I'll note a few more details. Original file name of SET549.tmp was BROWSEUI.DLL; 62.0kb in size, location c:\windows\system32 Unknown application created friday, june 27, 2008 modified sunday april 13, 2008.
The .txt logs for some strange reason are not showing up anywhere on my CD-rom while in my Vaio, so I'll have to repost from the XP with the logs. Then i'll take it back offline.

DrJeff~~~~~~~~~~~~is moving tomorrow, a secure remote desktop tuturoial would be very helpful, because my brother is driving up with me, and his girlfriend needs the XP for school, but she's not comfortable enough with computers to run any tools.

Hey Jeff,

Your logs are not showing any serious infections. What other problems are you having besides no desktop and can't run Java 6?

We'll try some stronger tools this time.

1) Run ComboFix

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

2) Run GMER

Download GMER from here:
http://www.gmer.net/files.php

Unzip it to the desktop.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.

3) Run Silent Runners

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Still here, looks like we have some sneaky malware. Without a desktop I was unable to completly save combofix to the desktop. I got a shortcut there, and it seemed to run fine. What do you think? Oh and I got java 6 .5 or whatever it is installed finally! Now it just needs the newest java that came out the other day. Here's the combofix log:

    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

Still no luck with the Kaspersky scan. Froze again at the same file. And I would remove the dvdxrip file from his system, but the scan only shows a partial hint as to the location of the movie, that my brother said he's never heard of. So I peaked around in the documents and settings, but I just can't pinpoint it's location yet without having access to the start menu's search feature. If I could open a search indexer, we could remove it and see if the scan proceeds. OR I could download a free trial version of kaspersky, and hope to perform a full detailed scan using it??
My brother's leaving for florida tomorrow, so hopefully if we can't get resolved by then I can talk him into not restoring windows and providing his desktop back with secure internet connection. My oldest brother almost ran the restore last night, but he agreed with me that the complete reformat is not a guarantee either of cleansing, and he had confidence that we could handle whatever problems remain. So what's next?
