- My mother downloaded a program, and i deleted it. "Ares" and it was a download manager. I heard it was a password cracker/etc. Could somebody check if anything unwanted may be still lingering in my logs?

Hey Cai,

Sorry for taking so long, the expert looking at my reply has been really busy.

Your log doesn't look too bad, let's run some tools to get rid of the infected files and folders.


Please follow my instructions in the order they were given, and print out a copy of it as you may not have access to the forums during the fix.

1) Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Old versions of Java have vunerabilities that can compromise your computer, please do the following:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
• Click on Continue.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

2) Run ATF Cleaner to clean up temporary files

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for Windows 98/ME/2K/XP and VistaDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3) Uninstall programs

Please go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove the following (if present):

BitTorrent
DNA <--- This is related to BitTorrent
MyWebSearch

Note: BitTorrent is a P2P program that can cause security risks to your system, I recommend its removal as a result of these risks. Please have a look here and decide if you want to remove it.

4) Remove entries with HijackThis

Please re-open HijackThis and Do a System Scan only. Put a check next to the entries below.

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

5) Upload suspicious files for analysis

We have suspicious files that needs to be checked. Before going to the site below, please do the following:

• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.
  
  
• Please go to Jotti's malware scan
• Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:

• Click on the submit button
• Please do the same for the file(s) below:

• Please post the results in your next reply.

6) Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

It seems that you forgot to do certain steps in my instructions. Please look at them carefully, and ask if you don't understand any part.

You said MBAM took no action, is it because you didn't do the following step?

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

If that is so, please re- scan with MBAM and make sure you select "Removed Selected".
