Lost thumbnails on ME computer

I am using Windows ME. I uninstalled several programs at one time. I answered yes to the question " do you want to delete these files that might cause other programs to not run correctly." I thought I could just re-install the programs. But now my picture files are not showing up as thumbnails even though I choose that view (they appear as icons instead of pictures). Also they will not do a preview when selected unless I customize the folder. Is there a way to restore the picture thumbnails?
