Hi,

I accidentally hit run instead of cancel on a video compression file. Both Sophos anti-virus and Super-anti Spyware told me somthing was trying to hijack my laptop. I ran both to remove the threats, but now my computer is owned by VIRUS ALERT! which seems to think it's the administrator (and not me). The C:\ drive has gone missing (although I can get to it through means other than Windows Explorer), as has links to teh control panel.

The time in the bottom corner also says 15:57 VIRUS ALERT!

Below is the log file from HijackThis.

Any help would be greatly aprreciated

Steverh

Hey Steverh,

Welcome to GeekstoGo! I'm Ltangelic and I'll be helping you fix your computer problem.

Take note that I'm still in training, and my posts will have to be checked by an expert. This may cause delays in between my responses, I ask for your patience. :)

I'm looking at your log now, and I'll post back with a fix when I'm ready. Thanks for your patience.

Hey Steverh,

Sorry for the delay.

Your log aren't showing any infections, we'll need to run a stronger tool to see what's hidden.

Please follow my instructions in the order they were given, and print out a copy of it as you may not have access to the forums during the fix.

1) Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Old versions of Java have vunerabilities that can compromise your computer, please do the following:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
2) Run ATF Cleaner to clean up temporary files

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for Windows 98/ME/2K/XP and VistaDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3) Remove entries with HijackThis

Please re-open HijackThis and Do a System Scan only. Put a check next to the entries below.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
<-- Please fix these entries if the administrator on your computer didn't set such restrictions

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

4) Run Deckard's System Scanner

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi Ltangelic,

sorry to take so long, I was away for two weeks without my computer. I know this topic has been closed, but I asked for it to be reopened.

I did what you suggested, and here are the DSS scan results.

*Whoever took control of my laptop has shut me out of the C:\ drive (except My Documents), windows explorer, and there is no DVD access (it can't find the D: drive.

Hey Steverh,

Your logs are not showing obvious signs of infection, let's run an online scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi LT,

I did what you suggested. The Kapersky log file is below.

Just a few things that may help. The product ID under My Computer > Properties is VIRUS ALERT!, not 55274-640-3848642-xxxxx as it should be.

Also, when I log on, it usually comes up with an active desktop error, and when I close, it has errors in closing Explorer.exe, plus a few others.

I did a search on "VIRUS ALERT!" and found this has happened to a few others. One perons was fixed by using MalwareBytes, but anothers wasn't, and ones persons was fixed by using the install disk on windows XP. Hope this helps you to help me.

Thanks

Steverh

Hey Steverh,

Let's run MBAM and see if we can remove it.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Hey Steverh,

Your problem doesn't seem to be caused by malware, the various scans we've done have cleaned up everything that we've found. Please follow the steps below first and then go to the Windows XP forum and post your problem there. Sorry for not being able to assist you.

1) Cleanup with OTCleanIt

Please download OTCleanIt.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double Click on OTCleanIt.exe, a window will appear.
  • Please press the CleanUp! Button.
  • You may be asked to reboot, click "Yes".
2) Reset System Restore
  • Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Properties".
  • Go to "System Restore" tab and check "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click "Yes" at the prompt. (Wait a while for it to finish)
  • Then UNcheck "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click "Yes" at the prompt. (Wait a while for it to finish)
  • Your System Restore is now turned on.
3) Update Adobe Reader

Please uninstall the current version of Adobe you have and go here to install the latest version.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Please post back telling me that you have moved on to Windows XP forum so I can ask a staff to close this. :)
