Well this is my first post here so I hope I follow the right protocol. This is a PC at work and normally we'd just reimage this guy and go on down the road but I wanted to at least try this first. Here is the log file that was created.

Since you are posting a log from a Company owned computer... There are a few things that need attention first before we proceed with this..

* You must inform your Supervisor immediately.

This because of:
  • Most company machines are connected into a network at some time or other, and your infection may compromise the security of that network.
  • If sensitive material is compromised by an infection, your company could be held liable.
* Your Company must give permission for us to give you assistance.

This because of:
  • We are not here to replace your company's IT Department. If there's an IT Department, then they are responsible to deal with this.
  • There may be sensitive material on your computer that your company would not want revealed in an open forum.
Also, since this is a computer used at work - the first thing I always advise is to back up important files you don't want to lose, this since malware causes a system unstable and it may happen that it suddenly won't boot anymore, because of the damage already present.

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately we had to go ahead and reimage it to get him back up and running. I wanted to try coming here for a fix first. If I get the opportunity to try this again I'll be sure to post my scan. I was doing this for my own knowledge so I could see where the root of the issue was.

As a matter of fact; since it's a computer used for work, it's the best action you could take, because malware leaves a lot of leftovers present which scanners won't show/alert. And as a company owned computer, you can't afford to have malware related leftovers present.. this should be a clean computer. That's why it's always a good idea to reimage the computer. As a matter of fact, I've blogged about this yesterday as well:

That's why, if it's a company owned computer, it's always better to start from scratch (with an image), than to clean the malware and proceed from there, because you would never be able to trust the computer for 100% if you clean this up manually and for a company you cannot afford that. :)
