When I try to open any program on my pc is tells me the following

"Windows cannot open this file" To open this file , Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer" .

And all my programs are mest up it only gives me the internet explorer. Please help .

Hi, bart_90016 :)

Welcome:

Download the enclosed folder. [attachment=22075:UnHookExec.zip]Save and extract its contents to the desktop. (You can use another computer to do so, then transfer the extracted file to the sick computer.) It is an installation entries file. Once extracted right click on the file and select Install.

Posted ImageClick here to download HJTInstall.exe
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hey Thanks alot for reply and the help. I did what you told me to do. But the computer won't let me install it. It still tells me to select a program to from the list to open it. It seems to kill any programs that tries to install. I get no icon of any program. What should i do ?

Hi, bart_90016 :)

Did the .inf file installed, or was the Hijackthis installation that failed? Lets try this:

Download the enclosed folder. [attachment=22084:regtmcmdrestore.zip]Save and extract its contents to the desktop. (You can use another computer to do so, then transfer the extracted file to the sick computer.) It is a Visual Basic Script file. Once extracted doublet click on the regtmcmdrestore.vbs. Once done, try to install Hijackthis.

Go to Start-> Run, type Regedit.exe and click OK. Does the Registry Editor display?

Okay the regtmcmdrestore.vbs was successful. How ever the HJThis still was not going thru. And also the REGEDIT.EXE told me to select a program from the list, which failed too.

How about the UnHookExec.inf above?

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.

Let me know if that works.

Download the enclosed folder. [attachment=22112:AssociationFix.zip] Save and extract its contents to the desktop. It is a Registry entries file.

Run Regedit.exe as previously indicated. Select File from the Registry Editor's Menu, then Import. Browse to your desktop and select the AssociationFix.reg file, click on Open. Select Yes if prompted to merge this file into your registry. Once merged, close all windows.

Attempt Hijackthis and post its report.

Hi, bart_90016 :)

Nice going. :)

There is no signs of malware in that log. Lets take a deeper look:

Posted ImageDownload Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from here or here to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of both, the main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply.
If the files are too long, attach them to a reply:
  • Scroll down to [Attachments]
  • Browse to the following folder:
    • C:\Deckard\System Scanner
  • Click Upload to upload these files one by one
  • Submit your reply

Hi, bart_90016 :)

All file associations are now Ok. Wonder what happened as I see no malware in that log. A scan wont hurt.

Posted Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi, bart_90016 :)

After MBAM scan is complete, you must click OK, then Show Results to view the results. Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. That way all malware found will be removed.

How is the computer doing?
