I managed to remove the desktop image and the BSOD doesn't pop up anymore, but I'm still concerned about the computer, so if you don't mind, I'd like to follow through with your instructions to make sure everything's gone from the system.

I tried to download the version of SP1a you linked me to, but after the installer finished extracting the files, this message popped up:

Service Pack 1 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 1, or vice versa.
