Hello! I am trying to remove an unknown virus that is sending me to various sites. I have a pop-up that comes up saying brought to you by Navigation Enhancer. I've found NaviagtionEnhancer-2.dll in my system but it won't let me delete it. It has completely disabled my anti-virus software and it will not allow me to download any updates or malware removal tools. Please help me! :)

Hello gunnerzwife , welcome to GeeksToGo! :)

My name is Tal, and I will be helping you in the process of removing malware from your computer.

Before we proceed to clean your computer from malware, let's go over some points that will help both me and you, and prevent causing damage to your computer:
  • Please don't be afraid to ask questions! :) No question is considered dumb here. It's better to be safe than sorry!
  • Please follow the steps exactly in the same order posted. If you can't perform a certain step, or you're unsure on what to do, please stop and let me know.
  • NEVER fix anything in HijackThis or other programs on your own! This can be very dangerous and cause harm to your system. If you see a certain entry or program you're unsure about, please don't hesitate to ask! :)

You may also want to Track This Topic. This feature of the forum will send out an email to the email address you've signed up with as soon as I reply, so you can be notified of my reply. To do this, please locate the Options menu, located just under the New Topic and New Reply icons. Once you've found it, click it, and choose Track This Topic from the dropdown menu (the first option). In the page that appears after you have clicked Track This Topic, select Immediate Email Notification, then click Proceed.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. Note: It's likely that the two logs won't fit into one post. If so, please post extra.txt in a separate post.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, I'm preparing for a trip.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

In your next reply please include the ComboFix log as well as a new HijackThis log

Looking good :) How is the system doing?

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Hi Tal,

Well, the pop-ups have stopped. However, I uninstalled my Mcafee because it wouldn't allow me to update it, thinking I could reinstall it. When I tried to download another anti-virus program it blocks it. Is it possible that I am still infected? My husband had to take the laptop on a business trip and won't be back until Saturday, so unfortunately I cannot run anymore scans on it until he returns. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Hi,

Do you mean that the security product you're trying to install still detects McAfee? If so, it's normal. 'Heavy' security suites usually leave traces on the system, even when removed by a 'proper' uninstaller. Therefore it's common for security suite makers to issue special uninstallers, McAfee's can be found on this page as well as instructions on how to run the tool.

Hi Tal,

No, that's not the problem. Although, I did visit the site you directed me to and successfully removed all of McAfee from my system. The problem is I try to download any type of anti-virus software and the download gets as far as 10-12% and it stops. I'm not sure what the problem is. Do you have any idea or suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey,

Terribly sorry for the delay. I've been out on a vacation at Scotland from August the 5th, so I couldn't see your reply. I will be with you when I return to Israel on the 20th.

Kind regards & sorry,

Tal

I ran the program and I still can not download any antivirus software. I can download files, etc with no problem. If I try to download any type of anti-virus software it will go so far and stop. Now my desktop is doing the same thing. I am frustrated and really need your help!

Hi Tal,

Actually, I tried to download a game offline and it blocked it also. I've been able to sucessfully open and download attachments. However trying to watch something as simple as a youtube video is impossible, because it won't download it completely. Any ideas? Thanks so much!
