Hi there, I would really appreciate it if something could help me out with my problem. I ran an .exe file from the internet that caused my background to turn red with a toxic waste sign, warning me "your privacy is in danger". I'm pretty sure the culprit is smitfraud, as I have read previous forums of members that experienced exactly the same problem. Consequently I also tried the same advice you gave to those members, namely, running smitfraudfix. Smitfraudfix, however, did not want to run on my computer even though I ran it from C:\Documents and settings (My c: drive doesn't appear on the 'my computer' screen, so I decided to run it from within the 'my documents' folder on the desktop). I also had to download smitfraudfix from another computer (the one I'm using to send you this message) and transfer it to mine with a usb flashdrive (as I did with the hijackthis.exe file) seeing that the internet browser is also not working (it keeps sending me error messages). I really hope you guys can help me. Thanks for your service!

Here is the hijackthis logfile

Hello

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Do this instead

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

It seems there is further problems. SDfix also do not want to open if I dubble click on it. If I right click it does however give me the option ("extract files...") to extract the files to a designated location. In the window that then pops up the icon of the c drive doesn't appear as a possible destination. In the "destination path (will be created if does not exist)" space I manually typed in C:\SDFix and clicked on OK. It then did a extract process....was this the correct move? Should I proceed to reboot the computer in safe mode?

Once in safe mode it wasn't possible for me to access the c drive to open the 'runthis.bat' file. So I once more extracted the files from the SDFix file, but this time to the desktop. I then rebooted the system in safe mode and ran the runthis.bat file from the extracted sdfix folder on the desktop. I typed Y to begin the cleanup process. This was the report:
