I will do the suggested when I get home tonight, but I want to point out several things.
Y: is a mapped drive to a Windows 98 computer on my home network. It's the only other computer on the network. We use it to run old games and allow the children to get on the computer if someone else is using the XP. I noticed in the logs that both computers have mIRC on them (Internet Relay Chat).
Also, the Kapersky Scanner indicates 12 viruses and the OTMove It will only kill 6. Is that right? I run Avast and keep it up to date, how could viruses get through the Avast?

Thanks again.

5 of them are from mirc and another one is from mbam-setup.exe which is legit.. To cut the story short, all of them are false-positive..

No antivirus/security programs are 100% perfect.. The best course is always prevention :)

While you are waiting, I'd suggest you to read these excellent articles below:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this excellent article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please also read an excellent article by miekiemoes :Help! My computer is slow!

And another excellent article by CastleCops Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection

OK, I ran the OTMoveIt.
My avast immediately identified xpre as a virus and recommended moving it to the chest. THe other options were do nothing or delete. I moved it to the chest. Each other virus - snapsnet, rasesnet, etc. did the same thing and I moved each one to the chest.

Here is the OTMoveIt2 log:

I took your advice and downloaded and read the articles. Great points and ideas.
What do you suggest from the above logs? I'd like to remove any unnecessary startup options, such as realplayer, quicktime, and any others. Every time I go into msconfig and remove the check and reboot. They disappear. However, they seem to appear several days later. How do we get rid of them from starting back up.
In addition, I'd like to clean the registry to remove unneccesary old programs.
Old restore points, I read where they may still be infected, so I'd like to remove them as well.
Please let me know the next steps.

Again, thanks for your tireless assistance.

Your log looks clean to my eyes.. To remove some startup options, please do the following..

Please re-open HijackThis and click on Do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IAAnotif] C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Application Accelerator\iaanotif.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Road Runner PhotoShow Media Manager] C:\PROGRA~1\ROADRU~1\PHOTOS~1\data\Xtras\mssysmgr.exe

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, then click Fix checked. Close HijackThis.

Please tell me if you need to restore any of the startup items that has been remove before..

In addition, I'd like to clean the registry to remove unneccesary old programs.

I'm highly advised you not to mess with Registry.. Should it be done wrongly, it could crash your computer or even worse, makes your system unbootable..

Old restore points, I read where they may still be infected, so I'd like to remove them as well.

We'll do that after this.. Since you requested to remove some startup entries, I would like to see another fresh DSS log before I'd give you my free-speech :)

I ran HiJackThis and removed 4 out of the 6 you recommended. I chose to keep the first 2 - Intel and Ati.

Here is the DSS log:

Good news.. Your log looks clean to my eyes...

Good news, your log looks clean to my eyes..

Now for some cleanup..
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please Install/Update Sun Java

Updating Java:
  • Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
  • It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
  • Select it and click Remove. This will uninstall the previous (outdated) version of Java.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7

Let's clean your Restore Points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous Restore Points which are likely to be infected)
To create a new Restore Point.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK. This will flush your old System Restore.
  • Then please UNCHECK the Turn off System Restore.
  • Click again on Apply, and then click OK. This will create a new Restore Point
System Restore will now be active again

If you are using Windows Vista, please go HERE for tutorial on how to use, disable and enable System Restore

I noticed you already have..

1. Avast! Antivirus as your antivirus
2. Malwarebytes' as your antispyware..
3. McAfee Personal Firewall as your firewall..

Lastly, to keep your operating system up to date please visit the link below monthly

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this excellent article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please also read an excellent article by miekiemoes :Help! My computer is slow!

OK, looking in the list of programs to remove I have:

J2SE DEvelopment Kit Update 1.5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Updates 6, 9 10, 11 and 15
These all have the icon of the coffee cup.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java™ 6 Update 10
Java™ 6 Updates 2, 3 and 6

Do I remove these as well?

Also, another question I"ve been meaning to ask:

We have four (4) different logons, 1 for each member of my family. When the other users login, not using the logon I've been using to remove these startup programs, will some of the programs startup? Do I need to run HiJackThis, system scan only, on all of the other three (3) logins and place a check mark in those programs that I don't want to startup or will the work we've already done accomplish this?

Do I need to do anything within each of the three (3) other different logons relating to these issues?

Thanks.

Yes, there are some similarities with the others. However, this is the login that both children use, and most of the time I don't sign them off to get to my login. Should I run a HiJackTHis log for the others and post them?

Lets run Deckard System Scanner for those accounts and post the log here.. Lets do one account at a time.. Just to avoid confusion with other accounts as well :)

When I went to another account, I opened my email account (Hotmail) and attempted to click on your most recent message that would take me straight here. When I click on the email notifying me of Topic Subscription Reply Notification, I receive the following error:

Object doesn't support this property or method.

Apparently this is a javascript error.

I went to Add/Remove programs and several of the Java programs were not removed. J2SE 5.0 Update 6 and Java™ 6 Update 10. I was able to remove the J2SE 5.0, but the Java 6 Update 10 won't remove. Fatal error during installation is what pops up after a few seconds of trying to remove it.

What do I do to correct this java error?

Here is the DSS log for this account:

Using the logon that we previously did all of the corrections, I was able to open the email leading me to this post. Why would one logon allow it whereas another won't?

Log looks good.. Not sure whether the email problem is caused by Java.. Have you install the latest Java 6 Update 7? If not, please do so now..

Here's the link if you need it Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7

Just do a full scan with Malwarebytes' and then with Kaspersky Webscanner on this account and then post the logs here.. Is there any problems with that account? (other than Hotmail problem)

I just reinstalled Java 6 Update 7 and tried to click on email messages. Will not work. When I click on Open in New Window, I receive:

java script:;

The page cannot be displayed.

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.
To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click "Diagnose Connection Problems..."

Other options to try:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error

This makes no sense.

Hello.. What browser do you use in the account?.. Is it IE? If yes, please do the following..

Enter Internet Explorer.. Click on Tools >> Internet Options

Choose the Security tab, and in the Internet section, under Security level for this zone area, click on the Default level. Click Apply

Do the same under Trusted sites and Restricted sutes too..

Also, under Privacy tab, click on Default >> Apply
