Hi,
I just got a Linksys Wireless-G router, Model number BEFW11S4 ver. 3, and was setting it up. I reset the settings and got the network working but if I try to use the internet I get the "not connected to internet page". I can access the routers settings through wireless without actually being plugged in so I don't think that's the problem. After running the connection diagnostics wizard it simply told me to contact my isp. I checked the log and it looked like it was a dns error. Any ideas?

DNS issues are easy to diagnose if a DNS issue is the case. However, they can be difficult to fix. Can you go to http://72.14.207.99/? Can you ping that address?

Do you use cable or DSL? Does your ISP require a username and password?

I could not go to the page and got this error when pinging:

Can you connect if you plug your PC directly in to the modem?

No, I can't connect to the internet if I plug my computer into the wireless router that has internet, if that's what you mean. I think the problem has something to do with how the router is handling the internet. I have dsl that runs to a switch that splits it off to 4 computers and I'm trying to connect the wireless through one of the cords that went from the switch to the computer. Could that be the problem?

What I meant was can you get online if you bypass all switches and routers and connect directly to the DSL modem?

Edit:

I have dsl that runs to a switch that splits it off to 4 computers and I'm trying to connect the wireless through one of the cords that went from the switch to the computer. Could that be the problem?

Let me make sure I understand this correctly.

DSL line comes in the house from outside and plugs in to the DSL modem. The DSL modem plugs in to a 4 port switch. The 4 port switch connects 3 PCs and then goes to the modem port on the router?

Is this correct?

Edit #2: Are any of the other computers on this network having issue accessing the internet?

No computers have problems accessing wired connections to internet. Yes you have the layout right.

And you are the only computer attempting to connect via the router?

Typically, switches are not DHCP servers. Have you statically set the IP for the router? Are the computers connected to the switch have static IPs?

Who set up this network?

All the computers are using DHCP and the 4 port switch is an 8 port fast ethernet hub. My ISP set up the network. The modems settings also show it as having PPPoA instead of DHCP so I guess that could be the problem.

PPPoA is usually included for username and password encapsulation.

What are you using for a DHCP server? Are you you sure that you are using a hub?

A hub can be a DHCP client but it can not be a DHCP server. This is because a hub has absolutely no clue what an IP address is. In fact, a hub doesn't even know what a MAC address is. A hub does nothing more than link two things together.

Try to statically set the IP address of the router.

Run ipconfig on one of the computers connected to the hub.

The default gateway address of the computer needs to be the same in the router. The IP address can generally be anything in the same subnet.

This means that if the default gateway address is say 192.168.1.1 then you would want to assign the router an address of something like 192.168.1.72. The last ocet defines the node or device in a class C network.

And back to this question, who set up this network?

The modem is the DHCP server. It has a setting that says DHCP Server with radio buttons signaling it as enabled. ipconfig shows my computer as getting an IP Address from this server so I know that's working.

Alright so set your router to these settings:

IP Adress: 192.168.254.40

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.254.254

I set my ip and subnet mask but couldn't find anywhere to set the default gateway. I turned the dhcp server off on the wireless router but its still on on the modem. Here's some tests.
