Hello there!

My Windows VISTA system is infected with Vundo.gen!R and Windows defender is unable to remove it.
Now, every time I switch the system ON, Windows Defender reports that the system is infected with Trojan:Win32/Vundo.gen!R and Quarantine or removal fails miserably EVERY TIME.

Any help to remove Vundo from my system would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the log.

Hello, my name is fenzodahl512 and welcome to Geekstogo.. Please do the following....

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from HERE or HERE and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Please let your firewall allow the scanning/downloading process.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
If you are using Vista, you need to right-click at dss.exe icon and choose Run as Administrator

fenzodahl512 I thank you for your reply. Unfortunately my system was so much infected and it grew so slower in performance that I had to restore it to factory settings. Vundo seems to have gone away with the wash but now I have another problem (which was there earlier as well). The problem is that my Windows VISTA system mis-reportsthe Hard Disk space. I have nothing installed on the system except for a few pre-loaded software and skype and msn messenger. I have a 160gb HD with 10gb and 150gb partitions. One is used by Vista for recovery the other partition is for the system and storage use. The current HD space as reported by the Vista is: 103gb! Where is the rest? I wonder really if this is another virus?

Your guidance will be highly appreciated.

Before I misunderstood you, let me rephrased it..

1. You have restored your computer into "factory setting" via a "Recovery CD".. Is that right?

2. You have a 160gb of HDD but in your computer, it only detected as 103gb.. Is that right?

A screenshot might be useful here :)

Answers to your questions in sequence:

1. NO. I used Dell's own restore utility available in the laptop itself and accessible when F8 is pressed on system boot.

2. The system keeps on mis-reporting i.e. now its showing me 103gb of free space but a few hours ago it was showing 107 and before that 112. When I restored the system it was showing me 129gb of free space on Wednesday 15th.

Your log looks clean to my eyes.. Not sure what caused that.. Do you install any programs/software after the recovery process?.. Perhaps that caused it..

By the way, your McAfee Firewall is disabled.. Please re-enable it..

Do you have anymore computer problem?

Here's some links for you to read..

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this excellent article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please also read an excellent article by miekiemoes :Help! My computer is slow!

And another excellent article by CastleCops Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection

Ok.. Please remember that the first rule is ALWAYS to have ONLY ONE antivirus AND ONLY ONE firewall inside your computer.. You already have McAfee Internet Security which consisting of your antivirus and firewall.. Should you decide to use other free version, make sure you uninstall McAfee first...

Free Antivirus (Choose ONE only..)

And click on below link for list of great free firewall for your personal use.. Please choose ONE only from the list given
