windows xp laptop - is there malware?

i just recently had viruses on my computer to the point i couldnt start it up so i removed everything from the computer and had dell step me through what to do to put windows on my computer again. the computer was running fine at that time then one of my friends downloaded programs to download music for free and i come back from vacation and my computer is running horribly. the computer keeps freezing and is really slow and ive deleted the programs that were downloaded onto it but that hasn't seemed to help. any help would be most appreciated, thank you!
