Hi there, hoping you can help. I recently downloaded what I believe to be a virus or spyware. I originally received a blue screen upon start up mwhich indicated my computer may be infected. My McAfee Security Center 8.1 indicated a description of Joke-bluescreen.c. I tried a number of thisngs and ran SuperAnti Spyware which quarentined and removed a number of items. I am on Windows XP. My PC is still not acting correctly, slowed time in navigating the web as well as my desktop settings have been altered in such a way where i can't change my background or screen saver. i also keep getting pop ups from what I believe to be a fake Windows automatic updates. Here is my hijackthis log. Hoping you can help

Run HJT and when it opens, click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
When HJT has finished scanning, a window entitled "hijackthis.log" will open - when you close this window the log will be saved into the Hijackthis folder.
Copy and paste this into your next reply - you have posted a startup list, which isn't necessary at this time.

I am a bit of a amateur at this

Just do what you are told, this is meant politely, and you'll be fine. If you aren't sure of anything, ask. Don't guess as that could just end in tears.

Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs: http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix
  • Please Note: This tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When CF has finished, it will produce a log C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Hi there, here is the Combo fix log, the PC is still acting a little strange, takes a long time to scroll internet sites ..ie..moving up and down...keep getting a pop up indicating that there is new HW detected which I am suspicious of. However, my settings seem to have been restored as I can now again change my background and screen saver. Didn't even have the tab before.

It is a found new hardware wizard and it is saying it wants to help install software for a Video Controller (VGA compatible). The reason I am suspicious is this never popped up before i started having problems. Other than that, the PC seems to be working well now...thanks for al;l your help. I am also getting an autmated updates pop up indicating to install a "Windows Malicious Software Removal tool - KB890830. It appears to link to a Microsoft site but i haven't installed it yet.

It is a found new hardware wizard and it is saying it wants to help install software for a Video Controller (VGA compatible). The reason I am suspicious is this never popped up before i started having problems

It's possible that something got corrupted - i'd let Windows install what it wants and see if it gets happier afterwards.

I am also getting an autmated updates pop up indicating to install a "Windows Malicious Software Removal tool - KB890830. It appears to link to a Microsoft site but i haven't installed it yet.

I assume that you have Windows notify you of updates but not automatically install them. If so, let it get on with it - it's in your interests to have whatever updates M$ throws at you.
