Her computer suddenly wouldn't boot and when she tried to start is safe mode it would only get to avgrkx86.sys then it would stop... any ideas????

A chkdsk /r has been run as well as fixmbr with no luck, she has the win XP install CD.

AVG...no surprise there.
Use to be good but now it's unpredictable imo.

If your friend can set the hard drive to slave and put it on another computer.

See if you can uninstall AVG antivirus.

Then pick a different antivirus once you get it going.

filehippo.com has a few free ones.

Also, go to the malware section here and run through the programs posted there.
