Hello

I had some viruses on this machine which AVG picked up and dealt with however I had issues accessing msconfig and task manager. I can now access msconfig fine after running Malwarebytes' Anti Malware program but task manager is still not responding.

Searching for taskmgr.exe through windows explorer and double clicking returns the error dialog box "Windows cannot find '...taskmgr.exe'. Make sure you typed the blah blah blah...".

I can only imagine this is due to some residual malware elements but being a layman, I don't know how to get rid :)

Thanks in advance
Chris

Hi there,

In notepad go to format and uncheck "Word Wrap"

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
Note:These logs may be too large to post in one reply, if so, please post extra.txt in a seperate reply.

Hi Mike

Sorry if the word wrap gave you a headache. Now turned off.

I downloaded and ran DSS but it crashes when it reaches the 'Examining Event Logs" stage.

Chris.

PS. I also have a small question about the forum here. I'm currently viewing it in what can best be described as a plain HTML format. This has only happened recently, I think after running the preliminary ATF/Malwarebytes/SAS checks, could it be related to that or have I just clicked something on the forum?

many thanks

Hi there,

About the forum issue - that happens a lot after running ATF - clear your internet cache and it should be back to normal, but do it after the next steps since I'm having you run ATF again :).

Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporary folders.

Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  • In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.
  • Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:
    • Reg - BotCheck
      File - Additional Folder Scans
  • Do not change any other settings.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Use the Add Reply button and attach the file in your next post (do not try to copy/paste it into the post).

Hi there,

Your log is rather odd - there are tons of files missing according to it, did you maybe prematurely close OTScanIt or do something with your PC?

Are you getting an error when press CRTL+ALT+DELETE, like "The taskmanager has been disabled by your administrator"?

Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Registry - Non-Microsoft Only]
< Drives - Autoruns > ->
NY -> AUTORUN.INF [[autorun] | icon=Setup.exe | open=Setup.exe | ] -> F:\AUTORUN.INF [ CDFS ]
< Trusted Sites Domains [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\
YN -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\ -> [Key] 1 domain(s) found.
YN -> 1 domain(s) and sub-domain(s) not assigned to a zone. ->
< Internet Explorer Extensions [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\
YN -> {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683}:Exec -> %ProgramFiles%\Messenger\msmsgs [Messenger]
< Internet Explorer Extensions [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\
YN -> CmdMapping\\{FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] -> %ProgramFiles%\Messenger\msmsgs [Messenger]
< Internet Explorer Menu Extensions [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt\
YN -> E&xport to Microsoft Excel -> %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL
[Files/Folders - Modified Within 30 days]
NY -> 1 C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. CLick the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here

Then,

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. Once done, uninstall any older versions of Java through add or remove programs.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

And finally -

Click on Start, click on Run
Copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

This will open up DSS configurationClick on Check All
De-select Event logs
Click on Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back both logs that open in notepad
Main txt and extra txt

If it doesn't work, repeat the above but just make sure everything under main log is checked and the two first items under options, leave the options under extra log unchecked.

Hi

As for my log I didn't close the program early and I can't say I've done anything out of the ordinary with my notebook.

When I press CTRL+ALT+DEL literally nothing happens. No error, no nothing. I only get an error when I search for the taskmgr.exe file and double click. The error says Windows can't find the file, make sure I typed it correctly, and try again.

OTScanIt fix was applied but the program wanted to restart the machine to complete. Log was opened on restart, Kaspersky and DSS logs also attached. DSS worked first time.

:)

Good we found the culprit,

You have a worm that spreads through removable media - please do not use them with this PC, in the instructions below I've included a tool that will disinfect them.

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\fonts.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\tskmgr.exe
    E:\rejoice101.exe
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\Run\\sys
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\image file execution options\boot.exe
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\image file execution options\taskmgr.exe
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{5547df04-ee63-11dc-92e9-0013e8756d81}
    purity
    emptytemp
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Then,

  • 1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
    Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from >here< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Re-run DSS and post back with Main.txt.

Let's do a sweep for stray registry entries, still can't access the taskmanager?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Oh! Task manager now works :)

Do I still need to do the sweep or are we clean?

Also, I hope that you can take a quick look at a topic I posted a few weeks ago http://www.geekstogo...showuser=113400. I believe it related to the same problem as you mentioned above (the worm that spreads through removable media).

Yes, I would run it - it only takes 5 minutes.

Post back with the results and if all is well we can get rid of all the tools you used and get you out of here :)

Is the other problem on the same computer? It's been more than 3 days for that one, you can post in the waiting room and you will get a reply within a day or two - I don't think I will have the time to help you on that one sorry, been a bit busier lately.
