Hi Guys

My computer runs Win XP Home Ed SP2. A couple of days ago I decided to abandon my long-standing loyalty to Symantec and to stop using Norton Internet Security 2007. I find the program too bloated and too much of a drain on system resources - boot up used to take a lifetime. My computer's specs are reasonable at Pentium 4 3.0GHz and 2.0GB RAM.

Symantec's removal tool / software, which I got from their website, was not working: something about the tool having expired. I saw this as a conspiracy to get me not to uninstall the program!! Anyway, I called their Support and the program was removed using Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, and the Symantec person also talked me through deleting certain folders and registry keys. We even ran an old tool meant for 9x systems! It was a messy and dragged out process. I was a bit nervous because she got me to go online without an antivirus and firewall program to retrieve the removal tool from Symantec's website.

After the uninstall of NIS 2007, I installed Avast Antivirus and Comodo Firewall Pro. Scans with Avast, including a boot scan, cleared up some stuff: lots of stuff from c:\System Volume Information|_restore. I also use SUPER Antispyware Free Edition and have run scans with this, an d this cleared up cookies, etc.

THE PROBLEM: My computer's CPU usage is now constantly at 50% or just above, even at idle - I am not sure when this started. When I open up Task Manager, under Processes, System Idle Process and apdproxy.exe have approximately 50 (each) under the CPU column. The computer is working noticeably slower and I can here the hard drive whirring away as if it is working on something. Previously CPU usage used to be at 1 to 3% at idle!!

I have run ATF cleaner and created a System Restore point. I attempted to d/load Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but Avast did not like it and said that there was a trojan virus in the d/load so I did not install and run this software. However I ran the Panda Active Scan and my computer's Windows program is automatically updated. I did the re-boot and the problem remains: CPU usage at 50% even at idle.

Here are my scan results for Panda and Hijack This:
