I had the very similar problem and I solve it by replacing the CMOS (coin cell) battery. The laptop (inspiron 1526) was not starting, nothing on the screen, probably because it uses the CMOS battery for booting. Changing the battery solve the problem and now its working just perfectly. (the wrong date and time before the final power-dead was indicating that the CMOS battery is the problem)
Even do, replacing the battery was not a trivial part, the battery is hidden so bad that you practically need to take every single part, but its worthed :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING THIS ON THIS FORUM!!!! There are so many forums out there where people ask for help, a bunch of other people give them suggestions, they fix there laptop / CPU somehow some other way and they never come back and finish there forum and tell everyone what the actual problem was or what the actual fix wax. Thank you so much for even telling me where the chip is at! I have teh same problem you had, my E1505 is like brand new condition and its such a shame that it doesn't work and I was not going to just pitch it without trying something. I'm so glad I heald onto it and now I have your answer to reference if that or the CMOS battery is the issue. Again thank you so much, this site is 10 times more helpfull than any other site like this on the net!! If you could please get ahold of me so I can see the pictures you have to offer and more info you have on this. I think this is a repair that I can handle or would be much cheaper to take to someone and say here is the chip and this is the MOBO and I just want this swapped out. I would just like to speak to you more about this so I know what else I need to do after the repair to get the bios flashed etc.

Thanks!

Jason.
