I have read the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" and followed the rules with one exception. I ran Malwarebytes full scan not the quick scan.

I had a problem with HijackThis and its Uninstall Manager - it shows me a list of programs on the left side, but when I choose "Save list..." it doesn't give the option of saving to a directory. Instead, a window opens & closes briefly. I did a search for on my computer fo INSTALLATION.TXT and checked Hijack's directory, but could find no .txt document with this name.

I have tried to remove Vundo by using SpyBot & Malwarebytes. Both programs show that they have located files infected, and I choose to allow the programs to delete them... but when I run the programs again, Vundo reappears.

I get System stalls every five minutes or so and they last for up to 3 seconds ... I also had a prob with browser windows opening that I didn't request. That's only happened a few times though. So far there have been no other symptoms.

I am running Vista Home Premium w/Service Pack 1.

I have been having this problem for about a week.

I appreciate your FAST response!

I have tried unsuccessfully to disable Norton's AV. In fact it appears there is no way to do it. Do you have any ideas?

I want to replace Norton's with Avast! Antivirus. I could uninstall Nortons, run ComboFix, and then install Avast! ... what do you think?

Thanks again for the rapid response... unfortunately the latest version of Norton Internet Security does not offer this method of disabling it anymore.

I did ComboFix (right clicked to Run as Admistrator), but after a few seconds an error screen appeared:

"Incompatible OS. ComboFix only works for Windows 2000 and XP."

I run Vista, so looks like ComboFix won't work for me.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

• Close all other windows before proceeding.
• Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

DSS only opened main.txt, it didn't open extra.txt.

3. Now, open the avenger folder and start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon.

• Right click on the window under Input script here:, and select Paste.
• You can also click on this window and press (Ctrl+V) to paste the contents of the clipboard.
• Click on Execute
• Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

• It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Delete", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
• On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
• After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
• The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply [b][u]along with a New DSS log

Hi,

I couldn't get Avenger to run:

I followed your directions above, right clicked on the Avenger icon to "run as administrator". At that point Vista dimmed the desktop and asked me if I wanted to allow the program to run. After that, the desktop stayed dim for about 2 minutes, then the desktop then regained its brightness. Avenger never started.

I am running 64-bit Vista - don't know if that makes a difference or not.

It does, Combofix runs on Vista, but not 64 bit, apparently Avenger has the same problem

• Save this as vundofix.vft and Save as type "all files".
• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Drag vundofix.vft onto the listbox (white box) of VundoFix.
• Click the "Remove Vundo" button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon

VundoFix is acting the same as Avenger - must be the 64-bit OS

Try safe mode, tap f8 while the computer is booting, with the above steps. You will have to save them in notepad so you can copy and paste. If no go, run dss and post the log. I will have to figure out a way to delete them
