Hi,

I was infected with trojans and adware, I bought spyware doctor and ran last night. It cleaned infections but now everything is operating very slowly, I can't run the malare scans for your forum so couldn't do the preliminary step; had trouble running hijack this, got error messages at first, but now have a log. Browers operating V-E-R-Y slowly. Random error messages when trying to access various programs. Can't access add/remove programs ...

Can you help?

Hi there,

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
Note:These logs may be too large to post in one reply, if so, please post extra.txt in a seperate reply.

Hi there,

You have viewpoint installed, I recommend uninstalling it as it is considered to be foistware at the moment, but is heading torwards being catagorized as malware. Uninstall it through add or remove programs and delete the following folders:

C:\program files\viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\OWNER\Application Data\viewpoint

You have Spyware Doctor installed and running, we will need to temporarily disable it as it can conflict with our fixes. Take a look here for instructions on how to do so http://wiki.castleco...toring_Programs

Now open Hijack This, do a scan only and check these items:

O2 - BHO: QuickTalk 2.1 - {A34FA88D-8437-4634-8A60-E913011EF2E5} - C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER\APPLIC~1\sp1\mstalk.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Run] regsvr32.exe /s "C:\Documents and Settings\OWNER\Application Data\sp1\mstalk.dll"

Click Fix checked and exit hijack this.

Reboot your computer into safe mode and delete this folder if the only thing inside is mstalk.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\OWNER\Application Data\sp1

Then,

please open Notepad by going to Start > Run and typing Notepad.exe in the window that pops up. Press enter and in the notepad window that appears Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+P) the following:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6C,69,00,00
Note: it is important to copy this with the spacing left as it is, also make sure "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" is the first thing in Notepad (No spaces ahead or anything).

In Notepad click on the "File" menu > Save As... Under "File name" type Fix.reg and Change "Save as type" to All Files
Posted Image
Now double click Fix.reg. A pop-up will appear asking you if you want to import this to your registry click yes.

And finally,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Post back with a new DSS log please.

Hi Mike:

I had some problems with these recommendations (see my questions below) -- can you let me know what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Jamila

Reboot your computer into safe mode and delete this folder if the only thing inside is mstalk.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\OWNER\Application Data\sp1 [THIS FOLDER WAS EMPTY, SO I DID NOT DELETE FOLDER]

Then,

please open Notepad by going to Start > Run and typing Notepad.exe in the window that pops up. Press enter and in the notepad window that appears Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+P) the following:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6C,69,00,00
Note: it is important to copy this with the spacing left as it is, also make sure "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" is the first thing in Notepad (No spaces ahead or anything). [MIKE: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? SHOULD I JUST TYPE "WINDOWS REGISTRY EDITOR VERSION 5.00" at the top of the notepad screen? It doesn't appear automatically, and I couldn't find it anywhere.]

In Notepad click on the "File" menu > Save As... Under "File name" type Fix.reg and Change "Save as type" to All Files

Now double click Fix.reg. A pop-up will appear asking you if you want to import this to your registry click yes. [WHEN I DOUBLE-CLICK ON FIX.REG (in the file name field), IT HIGHLIGHTS THE TEXT. I GET NO POP-UP. WHEN I DOUBLE CLICK ON THE ARROW AT THE END OF THE FIELD, I GET A POP-UP LISTING OF FILES IN DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS.]

Hi Mike:

Re: My immediately preceding post -- maybe I should be saving the Fix.reg file, THEN double-clicking on the file? If so, where should I save it? The desktop?

Also, when do I exit safe mode in the steps you listed?

Thanks!

Actually I'm glad! I for some reason did not have you backup your registry,

Let's make the instructions clearer this time around.

First off, if you do not know what the sp1 folder is and if it's empty you can safely delete it.

You can boot out of safe mode after you deleted the file/folder.

Then,

  • Go Here and download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.

Now, make the Fix.reg file like in my instructions above and save it to your desktop - Double click on the icon with the name fix.reg and it should work like I described above :)

Afterwards continue with my other steps please. If you need more help just stop and ask :)

Hi Mike,

I completed all the steps but the very last -- MBAM found six infections, trojans and adware, some in registry -- but then the program locked up and I finally had to exit. So it quarantined but didn't delete, and didn't produce a log.

Shall I run the scan again?

Thanks

If you could that would be great, I am curious why it is stalling since your computer isn't in *that* bad of shape to cause a situation like this..

Let's see the MBAM results and go from there :)

Question, how is getting on the internet? You think you will be able to do an online scan?

It is running sooooo slowly -- opening programs takes several minutes. --Is this a memory problem? I know I'm nearly at capacity, and I'm planning to install more in the near future ...

I will try to run MBAM again from the desktop. Re: the online scan ... I can probably do that, once I get to the correct link. It's just that getting there takes a LOT of time.

Thanks!

Hi Mike:

I'm sorry for the delay. The log is now clean and is posted below. Here's what happened when I ran MBAM again last night: It showed one infection, identifed as trojan.agent in the sp1 folder under application data. (See previous posts.)

You had said I could delete that folder if the folder was empty. Because it was empty, I didn't go back to delete it last night, but just ran MBAM for the second time. And even though the sp1 folder was empty, it showed up on last night's scan -- and the scan locked up for a second time and I had to exit again.

I deleted the folder this evening, then ran MBAM for a third time, and it worked fine. The log was clear [below]. FYI, the first scan took longer than an hour and a half. The third took 23 minutes.

There are seven items in quarantine from the first scan: Trojan.Agent (2) in Documents and Settings; and in the registry keys: Trojan.FakeAlert (1); Adware.Minibug (2); Adware.MyWebSearch (1); and Rogue.Multiple (1). Shall I delete?

Thanks
Jamila

Hi Mike:

My two preceding posts have the DSS and MBAM results. Please let me know if there's something further I should do.

And a software question, if you don't mind: I have quite a few anti-spyware and anti-malware scans, etc. --do I need all of these? What do I need to keep, and to run?

Thanks for all your help!

Hi there,

Did you make the reg file like I asked? The entry is still in the DSS log.

Let's do it again then! Make sure you backed up your registry with ERUNT like I instructed.

please open Notepad by going to Start > Run and typing Notepad.exe in the window that pops up.

Then,

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. Once done, uninstall any older versions of Java through add or remove programs.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

The scan takes a long (long) time, it is worth it though so bear wih me here!

As for your question, You really only need one antivirus, one firewall and one antispyware program - for the AS I see you have spyware doctor installed, as well as spybot S&D and Adaware, it's really your choice which one to run but I would say that spyware doctor is the better one out of the three.
