Dear Geeks to Go,

I am not a computer geek (I wish I were), and I have no idea how to remove very malicious viruses that have embedded themselves deep into my computer.

I was surfing, opened a video, and then my computer became infested. I use Avast and SpyBot, but they were not able to completely rid my computer of Vundo. I then tried VundoFix (it said there was no Vundo), and then VirtumondeBeGone (which seems to have helped in some way). I've also downloaded all sorts of programs recommended by forums like yours.

Anyway, I'm posting my Hijack log. If anyone could advise me on what to do, I'd be eternally grateful.

Thanks,

Indy

P.S. Forgive me in advance if I'm a spaz. I tried to attach the log, but it wouldn't let me, so I pasted it in below.

Hello, my name is fenzodahl512 and welcome to Geekstogo.. Please do the following....

Please visit below webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. DO NOT select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix (located in C:\combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Fenzodahl:

Many thanks for your quick reply!

I feel like such an idiot--this step is causing me problems:

Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, you should drag it on top of the ComboFix icon and let your mouse button go. This is shown in the following image.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.
Once the Windows Recovery Console has finished installed, ComboFix will open a prompt stating that it was installed and asking if you would like to proceed with scanning your computer. If you wish to continue, then press the Yes button and continue reading the tutorial from here. Otherwise, please continue with the rest of the tutorial below.

I drag the Windows icon on top of the Combo icon, and it asks me if I want to run Combo, not Windows. It does not automatically install the Recovery Console. Or is it already done, and I just don't realize it? Sorry, I feel really stupid...

Incidentally, after running VirtumondeBeGone the second time (before I contacted you), my computer seems to be cured and running quickly (that is, normally). I hope that ComboFix will get rid of any other lurking viruses and trojans. Many thanks again for your patient help--I look forward to your reply!

Glad to hear that.. Now, lets do the following...

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

NEXT

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from HERE or HERE and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Please let your firewall allow the scanning/downloading process.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
If you are using Vista, you need to right-click at dss.exe icon and choose Run as Administrator

Please post the following logs in your next reply.. Post each log in separate post..

1. Malwarebytes'
2. Deckard System Scanner (both main.txt and extra.txt)

Fenzodahl--

I have to crash (I wake up at 5am every morning). I will do this tomorrow evening and let you know my results.

What were you able to see in the ComboFix log--are there still viruses etc. lurking?

Thanks again for everything.

I think all the viruses and malware are gone--thanks to you and the other experts who helped me clean up my computer! It's running at normal speed, and I'm getting no pop-ups. I'm also doing some scans with SpyBot and A-Squared etc., and they're all coming up clean. So, THANK YOU once again for your kind and generous help!

I have one small, unimportant question that maybe you can answer. I use Avast as my 24/7 virus protection. Before I did the clean-up with VirtumondeBeGone, ComboFix, etc., there used to be two little blue icons (balls) in my taskbar tray. They're not there anymore. Avast is still on and working, though. When I open the Avast program, the box is ticked under Appearance where it says "Show Avast tray icon"--and yet the icons have disappeared. Do you know why this is so and what I can do to get the icons to reappear? If you have no idea, please don't worry about it--this is a trivial thing, and one that doesn't affect my computer's performance.

Thanks again for all the help you provided!

Sincerely,

Indy

Erm.. not sure about that.. Can you see it after you reboot your computer.. I don't use Avast, so I don't know much about it.. Maybe you will need to uninstall and reinstall Avast.. By the way, Avast is an excellent antivirus program...

Now, lets do this...

Please go to Start >> Run and type or copy/paste the following in the run box: "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft . Then press Enter
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Select everything it is displaying there
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
  • Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.

NEXT

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Please note that the space between x and / is needed

Dear Fenzodahl,

Please forgive me for not replying sooner--I had surgery the day before yesterday (all is well).

I followed your last steps, and then did a SpyBot scan and a Housecall scan--and everything is clean! My computer is running smoothly and normally; it's no longer slow.

Thank you once again for your kindness and generosity in sharing your expertise--I am very grateful for your help!

Sincerely,

Indy
