My laptop randomly crashes, with no blue screen, it merely turns itself off!

It happens when I am on the Internet and when I am not.

It also always happen when I run: Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AVG Scanner.

All constructive comments welcome.

PS It has just occurred to me that the random crashes could be due to the Auto AVG Scanner running. Hope this last snippet helps.

Does the laptop turn completely off, or does it reboot? If it turns off, it is likely a hardware problem.

Try going to Start, right-click My Computer, select Properties. Click the Advanced tab, then the third Settings button. Uncheck the "Automatically Restart" box, and see if the symptom continues to occur, or if you get a blue screen instead.

Just turns itself off.

It does not reboot.

I am thinking of disabling the AVG Auto scan and seeing what happens.

It does seem odd that the scanning programs always crash.

Does your laptop feel unusually hot? Are the fans spinning?

Spybot Search and Destroy,
Adaware Scanner.

All have been recently upgraded. I think they all involve uninstall/install to do the upgrades?

It is odd. Could it be overloading the RAM?

Thanks for your help so far.

Edit: Memtest can be added to the list of software that the laptop has crashed while running.

Overloading the RAM wouldn't cause a shutdown though....

Go ahead and open up the Task Manager and monitor it. If the CPU spikes right before shutdown, it gives us a place to start.

Also check the Event Logs under Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer and see if these shutdowns are writing any events.
