Hi,
I think I have a virus or something, I don't think I trust dells customer support, they already sent me in the wrong direction once today, I just happened to catch it. I have recently updated a program I have been using for years and when I did it I started getting these error messages:

Can't write to registry Kkey:HKEY_classes_ROOT\.tga
" ".exp
" ".psd
" ".art

if running windows NT/2000/XP/vista log on as administrator

can you help?

thanks
Betty

When you run the program, try right-clicking it and selecting "Run as Administrator."

I have done all the simple things, like run as administrator, and system restore, nothing works.

Bmoyer,

Please remember that all of us here are volunteers with real responsibilities to attend to. Please be patient with us as we deal with our real lives, as well as others in this forum who need help.

Have you tried modifying permissions for that registry key? What program did you just update, and to what version? Is Windows up-to-date?

First, in the Start Search box in the Start menu, type "regedit" without the quotes and press Enter. Give Vista permission to continue, and this will open the registry editor. Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT on the left side, and look for those trees you gave us - .tga, .exp, .psd, and .art. Do you see them there?

I'd also like you to try uninstalling the program and reinstalling it fresh. Maybe an association got messed up during the update.

thanks,
yes all of the trees are there. and a reinstall didn't help. The program actually installs even though it gives me the errors, it just doesn't run correctly.

Vista needs a repair install.... :)

Go ahead and right-click each of those trees, there should be a permissions option. Once in the permissions box, select the "Everybody" group and check the "Full Control" box. Apply the changes, close the registry editor, and reboot. See if this resolves your problem.

When I open it I get this.. you do not have permission to view the permission settings but you can change the permissions settings. Also there is not an everybody group choice.

Try using a registry cleaner and see if that helps.

Hi. I just solved this problem on my XP SP3 PC with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.TGA - but this solution should also work for any other extension under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

Problem:
I tried to install a program, PhotoPosPro, but was blocked with a message about "couldn't get write access".

Solution:
Thanks to some of the help suggested in this thread. I opened REGEDIT (start > Run > REGEDIT). Right click on "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT". Select "Permissions". Click "Add". Type in "Administrator". Click "OK". Click "OK" again. And close "Registry Editor" by clicking on the red X. Done.
